Understanding the mechanisms of change in moral norms and its behavioural effects are crucial knowledge for crime prevention policy and practise. I have not seen any in-depth analysis of the changing moral norms of smoking and its drivers but that may just be due to my ignorance?

One fundamental problem of asserting crime causation in terms of social categories such as, for example, sex, age, social class and ethnicity is the huge within-group variation. Typically, most people in any such category do not commit more crimes than people in general.
