Today was our final post-ex day, where we explored #osteoarchaeology. We took a deep dive into the excavation of the early med. Bowl Hole cemetery, which sits just outside the castle. This pm we were then joined by osteo, Giselle Kiraly, who taught us the basics of osteoarch. A fascinating day!

Emily and Anastasia are planning the new spread of large stones near the blocked #medieval gateway. Emily has a hand tape and plumb-bob to ensure accurate off-set while Anastasia "graphs" the point she calls out on the gridded permatrace (waterproof paper for site drawings).

We are between the wall stump and 13th-century #medieval wall where we discovered foundations in previous seasons. Today we were able to clear the rubble under the massive flagstones that were lifted last season, creating that level area to the right of the remaining stones.

Isabella is sieving soil from the area near the #Victorian postern gate and the #medieval wall foundations trench!

Aimee is planning the #medieval cobbles and rubble between the 13th-century wall and the wall stump so we can lift them!

A red deer mandible! It came out of our #midden. This is one of the largest species of #deer, and one of two native to Britain, the other being the roe deer which is tinier. #zooarchaeology

ANOTHER BIT OF #MEDIEVAL WORKED BONE! This seems to be a fragment of a comb from the end of Middle or Late Saxon period, up to about 10th century. The hole is where another piece would be riveted to this, and the base of the teeth is visible across the top.

Mark is bring down the edge of our old exposed #medieval foundations between the wall stump and big wall. We hope to figure out how it relates to the ivy coverage wall in the background that doesn't quite align with it.

Jack is excavating a sondage (mini-trench) next to the wall stump to give us a better idea of whether it's partially #medieval and #Victorian, or simply mostly Victorian. We have gotten some green glazed pottery sherds! #13thcentury

We've got a probable #midden (historical rubbish pile) in the south of the new trench, so we have decided to break it into quarters to investigate. In the second picture, you can see we have created four quadrants and begun to excavate.
