BACKROOMS is that rare movie where, even though I really liked it very much, I’m reading a lot of reviews on the other end of the spectrum and going - yeah, you’re exactly right. These 1-star reviews aren’t changing my mind about why I like it, but I also totally get what they’re saying.

Knock wood, but the suburban movie theater I usually go to has super respectful crowds. The group of girls in their phones before Weapons? They put them away during previews. The boys who dressed up in hazmat suits for Backrooms? No shenanigans during the movie. No phones, no talking, no problems.

I know Skinamarink was divisive; I was fine with it, in the middle. Backrooms actually makes me appreciate Skinamarink more. I love movies that you *experience*.

Backrooms is the opposite of any movie made for Netflix. Netflix movies overexplain plot points, beat by beat, and everyone clearly states what they’re doing because Netflix assumes most of its audience is only half watching. Backrooms is vibe. It’s not interested in explanation. I love it.
