It’s official. I’ve been kicked off AISH onto the new ADAP work program. I haven’t been able to work in 14 years. These days I’m stuck in bed 99% of the time. Barely managing to take care of myself. The government thinks I can find meaningful employment to make up the $200/month drop in income. 1/3

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs. However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!

If you are serious about supporting your neighbors and the vulnerable members of your community, you will need to ask them about their unmet needs and take them seriously when they tell you what they are. You will need to learn not to say sentences starting with "Well can't you just...?"

If you are serious about supporting your neighbors and the vulnerable members of your community, this absolutely and by definition means intentionally acknowledging and addressing some basic inclinations, like the one that says to abandon people who aren't always able to be there when you want them.

This is not something that can be put on the people who have been abandoned and isolated to correct. It cannot be made their responsibility to connect or re-connect with those who previously decided it was, for one reason or another, easier not to try.

So when it comes to "grow community locally" stuff, here's something non-Disabled folks especially have to figure out how to counter. There is a long-standing pattern where chronically ill people, even those who previously had extensive support networks and community, are abandoned and isolated.

[TW: Pet Death] . . Finally sharing. Cheerio’s health really took a downturn over the holidays & after consulting with the vet, I made the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make and opted for at home euthanasia. As of this morning, my best friend of 17.5 years is gone.

I don’t know what the current culture here is, but I’m going to reiterate my no unsolicited advice rule. And I do mean it. Not just medical/health advice but no unsolicited advice on anything. If people want advice, they’ll generally ask for it.
