Less violence in MI cities is great news, & the state funding commitments for community violence intervention will help keep this moving forward

🚨MDOC needs to modify their strip search policy to be less intrusive. To make the most of this win the next battle will be to make sure that impacted community voices are part of the review process—something the MDOC has rarely (ever?) done well.

This is a good change. MDOC had tried to limit legislative oversight by requiring 72 hour notice before a legislative visit. Legislature clapped back & said "let us in." Now it's on us to make sure they use that oversight capacity.

Reductions to parole board funding? Like they say in recover, let's play the tape out. The parole board needs to have the resources to get their decisions right: too strict and lives and $ is wasted w/ unneeded incarceration; to loose & there's a risk to community.

yep, cuts the reentry funds for community partners 😡 We need to separate support from supervision, the community partners provide trust and support no parole officer can. They should be funded, not cut.

Here's another big one: * Cuts to prison food aren't as bad as we feared, but food in there is already s***. Folks can't focus on rehabilitation when they are hangry!

Ugh, so much to say here. 1. Bad move cutting funds to support rehabilitation & reentry like A Brighter Way, Chance for Life, etc. 2. We've already had several deaths from lack of safety railings in prisons, not funding those is courting tragedy.

Michigan Expands Reentry ID Program to Wayne County, A Lifeline for Detroiters Returning Home
Michigan has expanded its reentry ID program to Wayne County, a decision that touches the lives of thousands of Detroiters and their families every year. The move ensures that people leaving the county jail, which houses between 1,300 and 1,500 people daily, can step back into their communities with a driver’s license or state identification card in hand. For many, it is the first tool they will need to reclaim stability.

Prison healthcare costs are rising at 10% a year, and w/ an aging prison population that number isn't coming down. Unless we can decarcerate, prison healthcare costs will mean less $ for schools, roads, and prevention.
