Throne of Blood (1957) Jidaigeki films are so good. Impeccable lighting in this movie, & a strong ghost story of greed and hubris. Very masterful adaptation of Macbeth, with some of THE most expressive acting regarding emotions of terror and outright shock. Really loved the climax to this.

Spent the rest of the day at Heian Shrine and its gardens, the Kyocera Museum's Mingei exhibit, and some walking around the Pontochou Alley area to get a late lunch. The city is really beautiful with its waterways and mixed architecture. Decent foliage now too, probably even better in a week or so

#books I finished reading "A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. One of those novels that gets assigned to lots of kids, but that didn't happen for me. It's basically a sci-fi take on Chronicles of Narnia. Three kids visit some different worlds, maybe learn a lesson.

#movies Taxi Driver (1976) — Only now getting to this one. Not what I was expecting! I mean, I knew it was about a taxi driver who eventually "loses it," but I didn't know that it was mostly going to be such a quiet, lonely, and uncomfortable sort of narrative.

Was curious why 文 is the symbol for schools in Japan, when school is 学校. Apparently it stems from 文部省 -- the Ministry of Education. I typically see it for "literary" words. 文学 literature, 文法 grammar, or just 文 sentence.

#movies Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) • rewatch — The first time I watched this I felt confused, not really sure what was or wasn't intended to be a joke. Just wasn't ready for it? It helps that I have since watched a couple Wes Anderson flicks, so now I at least get what sort of vibe this is going for.

#movies When Evil Lurks (2023) — Talk about a brutal and mean horror movie. A demon possession flick whose main goal is to kill its characters violently on-screen, and no one—and I mean no one—is safe. One of those films that makes you go, "wow, everyone is screwed," and you'll be right.

Pro Tip: a lot of those novels you were assigned to read in middle and high school? They were (most likely) written for adults. Consider giving some of those classic works a second chance, now that you can relate a bit more to the characters.

#movies A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) — I watched A Quiet Place last year and thought it was okay. Wasn't interested enough to check out its sequel. But I *was* curious about this prequel, mostly because the director (Michael Sarnoski) was the one who handled 2021's Pig, one of my favorite films.

Really ought to catch up on my movie mini-reviews, before I start forgetting what I thought about them...

caught Kamen Rider ZETZ on TV (the 36th kamen rider). This one's themed around sleep, with catchphrases like "GOOD MORNING" and "RECOVERY" and I have to wonder how tired the creators were when they came up with this one
