Another new class getting started with BrickUp today. We keep noticing this: when children aren’t racing the clock, they’re far more willing to think.

What's your favourite primary/elementary maths question? We love this one. With the algorithm, the answer seems surprising, but every other way, it seems so obvious.

This is what we think fluency looks like - can you follow their moves? 1x7x7x2=98; 98÷7÷7x2=4; 4x5=20; 20÷5÷2x11=22; 22÷11x13=26; 26÷13÷2x5x13=65... How could they get from 65 to 54? Comment below 👇

Recalling facts is just one part of fluency. NumberRamble challenges children who 'know' facts to really use them, developing flexibility and number sense. It stretches thinking through huge amounts of reasoning and problem solving! How do you think you'd do?

So lovely watching children play our games. Two things stand out: 1) The huge amount of mathematical thought in this short clip 2) Sound on to hear the quiet concentration of the rest of the group doing the same.

Learning is messy and takes time. At NumberClub we cherish the messy stuff along the way - taking the time to try, to fail and figure it out. Maybe this is what people mean by "productive struggle". This is what it looks like. An important 5 minutes in this child's learning.

NumberClub is underpinned by a simple idea....children happily get through the huge amounts of mathematical thought they need, if you give them ingenious mathematical tasks to practise their facts, rather than trying to motivate them to answer trivial questions over and over.

I love watching these playbacks because you really can physically see that fluency develop over the course of the level. Eg, notice how the player initially tries 2+3=6, but once this has been rejected, they play two instances of 2+3=5 without a pause.
add a skeleton here at some point
