Sunday and other stupid statements from this week
All contributions welcome. From this morning in the Irish Independent: Now Powerscourt has cancelled the booking, presumably under pressure from activists who were planning to picket the venue in protest at Palantir’s links with Israel and the US military, both of which use its software to identify targets for missile strikes. To be fair to critics of the planned meeting, being suspicious when rich people gather in secret is a perfectly natural response.

As Ireland's Presidency of the EU starts, there are far more pressing European matters coming for many League of Ireland fans. We're heading into the European Football Season next week. Am off to Malta myself to see Rovers take on Floriana in the First Round of the Champions League Qualifiers with the home leg the following Tuesday. In the Europa League Derry head off to Sofia to play CSKA.

Yeah, that time of year again, when the trucks pull up in Fairview Park, the ground is cleared and a giant tent is put up. All for seven live concerts. There were nine last year, which was relentless. Eight the year before, likewise. Seven the year before that. Eight the first year. Seven feels more manageable, and perhaps I'm getting used to them but this year they seemed a little quieter (well, most of them).

This is fascinating and hat tip to Tomboktu for drawing attention to it - research conducted some years back that points to what may well be the oldest human story. As wiki notes: The high visibility of the star cluster Pleiades in the night sky and its position along the ecliptic (which approximates to the Solar System's common planetary plane) has given it importance in many cultures, ancient and modern.

Did this some years back, a post in this slot on songs about Summer. And it's Summer again! A little after mid-Summer too, but always found that strange because I kind of count late May and June as Summer, so there's still two months of July and August left to go. Anyhow any favourites or obscure ones to add, feel free to put them in comments.

Signs of Hope – A continuing series
Gewerkschaftler suggested this a while back and it's as good an idea now as it was then. Whatever else those of us on the left need some hope, need some tangible achievements to hold on to, something that gives a sense of how things can be made better: “I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.” Any contributions this week?

A UK election now, soon or at the end of this government’s term?
Redzer asked in comments: Assuming that Burnham does succeed Starmer, will he call a snap election to give himself a proper mandate. And if he does, what happens to the DUP after the Donaldson verdicts? Both interesting questions, but the second I would hazard is coming into view just this week. The aftermath is very bad for the DUP. Already questions asked by his former colleague Jim Wells (now of the TUV) as to how much was known inside the DUP, though some listening to the BelTel podcast (the last seven episodes have, tellingly, dealt with Donaldson or the DUP) might have wondered why, given the egregious behaviours (though not at all illegal ones) described how alarm bells weren't going off about him years before.

The National from Scotland has the following report: On June 18 at 10pm, around 60 men dressed in black organised into four columns outside Glasgow Cathedral. Craig Houston, a Scottish podcaster and member of the neo-Nazi-backed Restore Britain party, shared video of the event and suggested it showed “Glasgow rising”. Houston noted that the activists had laid a “wreath to our fallen” which read “we apologise", as well as a card reading "il fine giustifica i mezzi" – Italian for “the end justifies the means”.

Hardly a surprise that the Guardian's Larry Elliott, long time eurosceptic, should argue at the time and after that Britain was right to leave the European Union. What's telling though is his rationale for supporting it, despite the evident problems left. What's also telling is he takes seriously Frank Furedi's thoughts on this matter. His first reason is that 'Europe isn't working'.

A piece here on An Phoblacht from SF National Chairperson Declan Kearney, MLA. Two weeks ago, racist pogroms were mounted against ethnic minority and migrant people in greater Belfast, forcing families from their homes. Elsewhere in the north of Ireland, multiple violent attacks and intimidatory protests took place. This vicious onslaught was preceded by a murderous knife attack in North Belfast which caused inevitable shock and outrage.

All contributions welcome. This from this morning on Andy Burnham's Irishness: Why some people in Ireland continue to be impressed by, or even interested in, such a statistically unremarkable detail remains a mystery — especially as an obsession with Irish blood tends to be seen as a red flag for far-right, nativist tendencies these days. What is undoubted is that our desire to establish a genetic connection with certain politicians directly correlates to how much we already like them.

Conor Pope in the Irish Times had this recently, organising, if that is the correct term, a holiday in Ireland using A.I. Now, having had reason to use so-called 'A.I.' closely and also, though not simultaneously, book various train journey's across Europe recently it strikes me how useless the former is with relation to the latter. It took a process of hours to investigate routes, sign up to various rail providers, check connections, see that there were trains and those trains at the correct times and then purchase tickets.

Here's something that will surprise none of us here, though least of all Irish Election Literature. The Electoral Commission has found that posters are more effective than social media in raising awareness about elections, often reaching “low interest” voters, playing an important role in the democratic process. A review of the use of posters in elections by the Commission found that while Irish people dislike them, and want to see their usage reduced, politicians and candidates see them as crucial.

Now one reads: The Government will not proceed any further with legislation to remove the triple lLock until the autumn, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has told a meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party. The Government approved the text of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2026 earlier this month with the intention of having it enacted before the end of the year.

Very conveniently, for anyone asking that question, we have two useful bits of information. First up there's this from Wiki: Labour: 30%, Tory 20%, Reform 27%, LD 11%, Green 7%, SNP 3% Others 3% This was taken by More in Common between 15-19 May. Event may overtake that. But feed those figures into the model at Electoral Calculus and predicted seats are as follows:

A double standard
Listening to Alastair Campbell's thoughts on the departure of Starmer and presumed arrival of Burnham, in passing he made a point that it was disgusting the lack of media coverage of the attacks on Muslims in Edinburgh. He also noted a double standard in respect to the coverage of the attacks on Jewish people in Golders Green. And he's right, it's not that one should be downplayed, it is that both are appalling.

Reading Jonathan Freedland in the Guardian about the end of the Starmer era (is six or seven year period long enough to describe as an era?) last night I was surprised by this. Historians will puzzle over this one. Of the six prime ministers that have led Britain over the last decade, with a seventh now on the way, it will be the fall of…

Starmer out
A bit bemused at how quickly this has all gone.
But then one looks at the polling on Starmer and how he is so profoundly unpopular and the sense that it cannot be changed. He seems to get that too: The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next…

Triple Lock and Fianna Fáil
Looks like grassroots campaigning on the issue of the Triple Lock may be paying off: Taoiseach Micheál Martin's desire to change the Triple Lock, and no longer require UN approval before sending more than 12 troops abroad, is facing a backbench pushback. The Fianna Fáil parliamentary party will discuss the issue this week after several of its TDs signed a letter which argues that the new policy needs to be considered as "a matter of urgency."

Sunday and other stupid statements from this week
All examples welcome. A discussion on Brexit has this: Bad actors were quick to exploit these potential flashpoints. Shortly post 8am the day after the Brexit vote, Morning Ireland got Sinn Féin’s late deputy first minister Martin McGuinness on the line. He declared that Britain now had “no democratic mandate to represent” Northern Ireland, and that it was a “democratic imperative for a border poll to be held”.

Okay, years ago, literally, wrote a piece on this site about a fine 1970s Anglia TV hoax documentary. This was Alternative 3 and as noted in the piece: What it purported to be was an account of the disappearance of a number of scientists, a link with the space programme, or rather a secret space programme and a video tape which when decoded was meant to show the first landing on Mars by a joint Soviet/American team in the early to mid-1960s which…

Back on Bluesky
Apologies to anyone who follows the CLR on Bluesky, we only realised recently, thanks to Tomboktu, that it wasn't working and hadn't been for a month or two. There's some setting at either the Wordpress end or Bluesky's side that seems to stop after a period of time. Anyhow, it's a sign - perhaps, that many of us aren't hugely invested in that side of social media, but that's just us!

Mentioned last week, the passing of David Hockney. He was a genuine character and an artist of considerable genius. This is a painting of his I'm particularly fond of. Nice of the Tate to provide an insight into it but as with the best art it speaks for itself. Though I like his honesty in the following quote: When you photograph a splash, you’re freezing a moment and it becomes something else.

This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Cabaret Voltaire’s Micro-Phonies
Still working slowly through post-punk and after, and here's a track that sits at a cross-roads between that genre and dance and industrial. Released in late 1984 at this stage it's quite the listen - a landmark in electronic music from Sheffield and from the time. That industrial aspect, a certain abstract quietly, is present and correct, but are those bits that sound like Art of Noise or Propaganda?

As it notes: As the 10th anniversary of the Brexit vote approaches, the verdict on Britain’s economic performance is clear: voting to leave has resulted in severe costs for households and businesses. The immediate recession predicted in the Treasury forecasts ordered by George Osborne – dubbed “
