So I guess my short film screened at two different film festivals earlier today.

Watched a documentary about Laserium and they would refer to the operators as laserists, which is good. The doc feels like laser shows as an art form are kind of in a decline because of more preprogrammed laser shows and less experimentation and individual performance of the laserist.

Okay I did a bubble sort as a compute shader and it’s still kind of slow since it is a bubble sort, even if it gets to bubble the whole array in parallel. 2966 calls to sort a 6000 entry list. Where I’m hoping I can use it is on something that will be mostly sorted already.

The Replica anime has a light vignette in most shots. Kind of adds a haze or dream look to it. Foreground objects can occlude it, but I think kind of just objects “in focus.” Like in an over-the-shoulder shot the character who is a shoulder won’t occlude it but the character talking will.

This is still true. The goofy shaders frequently dovetail with goofy tool scripts. Like yeah, the shader displays 4096 star positions based on a 64x64 texture but first you have to convert real star data into a 64x64 texture.

This book on how to play pool gives advice on bank shots that you can imagine where your target would be reflected in a mirror but then completely beefs the illustration like they forgot how reflections work.

So I may have made a VR animation tool in Godot over the weekend. You can import an animation track, modify rotation and position of bones on key frames with the VR controllers, then save the changed track as a resource.

I was surprised it seems like they are using just colour and velocity without normals, depth, roughness. But I guess then they would have needed all those same things for the training data. While colour and velocity can be scraped from any video.

I’ve decided this is a bug, not just me failing to figure it out, and submitted it as an issue. The tip for Godot shaders is the BONE_INDICES work fine as long as the mesh has four bone weights per vertex but not if it has eight.

Trying to figure out how bone indices and weights are encoded in Godot shaders. I’ve used BONE_INDICES[0] before and it worked fine but now it’s glitchy with vertices that should be visible hidden and vice versa and I suspect the difference is whether it’s encoded 4 or 8 bones.

This is kind of neat. Noise texture that feels fairly inorganic on its own but using that noise texture to distort itself starts to feel much more organic.

I’m becoming kind of a one-theory guy but if big tech sees everything as engagement/user acquisition and retention, then Microsoft saw someone look up a guide or something on their phone and got worried about them engaging with a not-Microsoft-controlled platform.

Okay this technique fascinates me. I had done a shader that let me mix pre-rendered depth with 3D objects but thought it was only a technical curiosity.

Cribbage has a board but we typically call it a card game not a board game. The board is mechanically just a point tracker but it makes it a lot more convenient than if you had to write down your score.

Hmm. The lights on this free car model provide emission textures but then the light vertices haven’t actually been UV mapped to match those textures.

Was inspired by a shot from the furry shojo anime. Made a tool script mesh generator and shader. The flicker animation uses a texture so I could use my Quake flicker patterns here, makes it easy to iterate on sparkle animations. Current animation string is “kz”
