Decio (as a variety) is possibly the most ancient apple in England but it is impossible to tell if it is still the same which was known in Tudor England and possibly introduced by the Romans. Small but sweet and fruity taste. Ready to pick now. #heritageOrchard

Our imposing almost 30 metres tall black #poplars are actually quite rare. They are between 30-50 years old & could live up to 200 years. Black poplars are dioecious. Ours are all male. From England’s surviving 7000 wild black poplars, only 600 are females. The wood is naturally fire resistant.

'Redstrake' cider apples are mentioned in a letter by Hugh Fortescue, dated 18th May 1695. They are believed to have been developed in the early C17th by Viscount Scudamore. The original apple variety could be propagated from cuttings but was already in decline by the late C18.

Wildlife allowed me handful of Golden Harvey apples this year! A small apple with a big taste! Definitely a 'keeper' - quite literally. It is self-sterile so not suitable for a small garden with only space for one tree. An old variety which may date back to the early 1600s. #heritageorchard

My first decent crop of GENNET MOYLE, a cider apple known since the 17th century. The modern variety probably dates to the 19th century. Slight orange red flush. Cooks to bright lemon purée. Sharp, strong flavour – in need of sugar (Perfect for jam making). #heritageOrchard

With my first true crop of sweet #grapes, I remembered that in Physiologus it says that the #hedgehog goes into the #vineyard, and plucks some grapes before flipping itself on its back, making the grapes stick on its prickles and so taking them to its young. Quite a cunning trick.

Motivated by last night’s program on Norwich Castle’s complete revamp, I went to check out the original medieval church door and its C13 wrought iron work that inspired their blacksmith for his work at the castle. Raveningham St Andrew church.

Got to see Norwich @norwichcastle.bsky.social since it reopened. Definitely worth the long wait! Best bid the roof top. Would have gone for medieval art exhibition if photography was allowed.
