The single-stair and other building code reforms happening across North America have been incredible, but we clearly need more fundamental changes to the code update process. We'll be showing why, and how, over these next several episodes.

This - for malls & esp big boxes - is the way forward for mass social housing here. You can even keep the retail for the tax revenue!

For some people it’s very important that we build less affordable housing lest it offend the delicate sensibilities of the homeowner class

Why is the rent so damn high in LA? Simple economics: the demand for housing is extremely high and our housing supply is extremely low.

The City of LA, embarrassingly, voted yesterday to oppose
#SB79
(legalizing housing near transit). Watch this incredible rebuttal from
@cd4losangeles.bsky.social
, where she says that the city isn't acting in good faith to address the housing crisis, & that state intervention has been necessary.

Cruising. Rather a lost art nowadays—but in its post-Stonewall-pre digital 90s heyday, the chance encounters of cruising was one of the charms that drew me & millions of others to NYC & SF. The pre-AIDS Christopher St. sidewalks of the late 70s-early 80s were packed with herds of hot, horny men. 😈

The uniquely North American idea that single family areas are sacrosanct was spread by for reasons that are a mix of good intentions, profit, neurosis, and rank racism. You can't address housing issues in this country without deconstructing the primacy of the SFH.

One last point: Staff at places like SAJE and the Western Center really need to reflect on what it means that they keep ending up in coalition with groups like the realtors and wealthy, exclusionary suburbs.
