I had the pleasure of listening to my colleague @thorabjorns.bsky.social lecturing my class on the psychology of social class. Most arresting were her depictions of perceptions of inequality. We vastly underestimate the wealth divide by a huge magnitude. The wealthiest hold 48.6% the poorest .02%

Discussion with an old friend last night about veganism. She genuinely thought cows ‘give’ us milk. She did not know the milk was intended for their calves. She honestly believed cows felt no fear, or pain on slaughter, she thought they were stunned on leaving the truck. Not stupid, duped.

I attended a beautiful remembrance service this morning. I couldn’t help but notice the lack of ‘patriots’ though? Since poppies, our fallen heroes, and respect is such a strong narrative in their ‘ranks’, where were they? Why did they not venture out in the pouring rain to demonstrate remembrance?

‘It’ always starts with words. We can track the genesis of genocide in similar ways. First they stereotype and discriminate. Then they become prejudicial. From there it’s ‘easy’ to dehumanise, divide, and attack. Once there is an ‘us’ and a clearly stigmatised ‘them’, then persecution is fair game.

Great example of the illusory truths which pervade our media channels. It seems plausible and lots of people are saying it, ergo, it *must* be true. Even when it is completely false, the damage done by blind and malevolent sharing means distrust and suspicious are fuelled and the facts obscured.

It’s blooming obvious to all of those who actually think about factory farming, intensive agriculture, and the incredible levels of medication required to keep disease at bay when animals are kept in confined, overcrowded spaces. Let’s start by being honest about where most your food comes from…

What I’d like to see is a comparison between the contribution of the average Reform voter/supporter vs the contributions of the immigrants with indefinite leave to remain whom they seek to vanquish and remove. Our society, what tattered remains would be left of it under Reform, would crumble.

There are indeed religious, including sharia courts in the U.K. They deal with family law and marital disputes. They are not legally binding, and unless you are Muslim, much like a mosque, you’ll likely never see inside one unless you make that choice. More weaponised fear.

I wish I appreciated more when we have people in public office with dignity and respect. I wish I didn’t have to include inoculation against wilful mistruths in my classes. Especially not regarding people in the highest offices in the world: it’s extraordinarily repugnant to have to do so.

Tylenol, nor paracetemol, cause autism. Despite anything RFK Jr or Trump say. There’s quite simply no evidence. And yes, it has been investigated. And no. Not all studies are equal, nor can assumptions be drawn from cherry picking the sources which suit the narrative. You’re welcome.

There are loads of similarities in terms of leadership style. Hitler used ambiguous statements and such was his position with his followers, they actively competed to do his bidding, they were creative in their quests to kill more Jews. Hitler was an “entrepreneur of identity”, and so is Trump.

It will never not amaze me that America, the land of the free, is blithely sleepwalking into authoritarianism. They’re accepting censorship of their media and speech, they’re allowing their education, science, & culture to be destroyed. Trump wants to be King, and the faithful bow and scrape.

At some point, when people, particularly children are dying, they’ll rush to blame any other cause. These are not serious people: they’re ignoring scientific reason, evidence, and fact to amplify and legitimise their anti vaccine ideologies. This should be utterly terrifying for public health.

I started my social psychology class off today by telling students that if they don’t currently understand the pivots, the hypocrisy, the partisanship, which has ensued, then after this module - they will. Being able to explain current events, and understand their social world, is powerful.

Free speech, no not that free speech, the kind we like, the speech that allows us to hate, but doesn’t allow others to make a joke. Yes cancel culture is not, in fact for woke snowflakes but is actually all part of our type of free speech, indeed. Nothing to see here.

So where are we on free speech now? ‘Cos we’ve been arguing there’s no such thing as speech which is free from consequences for the longest time. And that was rigorously opposed by the free speech ‘patriot’ types. But now apparently not only is speech not free but you can also be cancelled too?

How do we square condoning violence against some groups/people whilst condemning violence within their own group? Easily, unfortunately. We tend to allow more moral transgressions within our own groups. We forgive people, who share our ideologies, acts which we abhor in others. Knowing this /1

My morning juice 🍊 ☀️ Did you know 25% of lower income adults in the U.K. and 40% care home residents are vitamin C deficient? Lack of access to fresh food, smoking, and being male were all indicators. It’s appalling how cavalier our govts are about protecting the health of the most vulnerable.

That’s utterly shocking. Moreso when you consider the amount who are starving. We’re so removed from the role of food as health giving in favour of flavour satisfying, we seem to have lost sight of balance and nutrition. This will not end well.

Curious how thoughts and prayers aren’t enough now isn’t it?

I absolutely despised Charlie Kirk and all the misogyny and hatred towards others he advocated. But, I’m not going to be gloating over his death, or citing his views on gun control. He had a family and two little children lost their dad. Let’s do better, be better, and have some compassion.
