Many plants defend themselves with physical defenses. Spikey armaments, at various scales, are the subject of this week’s posts. Let’s start with root spines: Adventitious roots that harden & become sharp. Cryosophilla palms do it best. 📷: Cryosophila warscewiczii

Anisophylly means “unequal leaves” & refers to the production of unequal leaves continuously & concurrently (not a growth stage). Maples (this is Acer rubrum) produce a pair of leaves at each node, but one leaf has a longer stalk than the other.

Here’s one that everyone knows: Sunflower (Helianthus annuus; 📷: hourourmono CCBY2). Of course, this is not one flower. It’s a head of showy, yellow, sterile flowers surrounding a disk bearing small, dark, fertile flowers.

Ode to Great Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum biflorum), a gorgeous wildflower native to eastern and central North America. It’s an absolute stunner for the garden in partially shady areas, resembling a gigantic lily of the valley.
