Capt. J. Gwyther Jones (2nd from rt), 18th (Bantam) Bn, Welsh Reg & officers in a trench near Bourlon Wood, Nov 1917. Gwyther Jones was wounded during the attack on the Wood & the losses suffered were so severe that the battalion was officially declared to have “ceased to exist” on November 26th.

#OTD 1854, during the #CrimeanWar Sgt Ambrose Madden, 41st Regiment (later the Welsh Reg) led a party of men at the battle of Little Inkerman. They ambushed and took one Russian officer and 14 privates prisoner. Madden took three captives himself and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery.
