#FlashbackFriday to 1914. Men of the 11th Bn, Welsh Regiment, (Cardiff Pals), wearing their privately purchased brown uniforms, earning them the nickname ‘chocolate soldiers’. They bought it at Jotham’s Ltd in Cardiff and, in the early days, wore Bakelite ‘Cardiff Commercial Battalion’ cap badges.

#OnThisDay in 1944 4080467 Pte Wilfred Lewis Green, 3rd Bn, Mons Reg, died of wounds in Holland. Wilfred, from Mountain Ash, had fought in the Battle of Normandy and in Belgium before arriving in Holland. He is buried at Mierlo War Cemetery, in the Netherlands. He was 28 years old. #WW2 #OTD

#FlashbackFriday - the 6th Bn, SWB, during the battle for the Mayu Tunnels, Burma 1944. They were a key stronghold—packed with ammunition & fiercely guarded by the Japanese. After days of heavy fighting, the battalion broke through with a Sherman tank… setting off some spectacular explosions!

#OTD 1845, Maj Gonville Bromhead VC was born. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the Defence of Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. Bromhead died February 9, 1891 in Allahabad, India, aged 45. He is buried at New Cantonment Cemetery, Allahabad, India. #VC #Zulu #medal

Hard to choose just one goat for #WorldGoatDay, but meet Taffy III 🐐 — mascot of the Welsh Regiment, gifted by Queen Victoria in 1896. He served in the Boer War & saw action at Paardeberg & Driefontein, and died of colic on the march from Graspan to Bloemfontein in March 1900. #goat #boerwar

#MedicalMonday – shrapnel from the chest of L/Cpl Cecil Lane, 10th Bn, SWB. He served during #WW1 and was awarded the MM for capturing 7 Germans at Mametz Wood, despite being severely wounded. He later earned a bar to his MM, before being hit by shrapnel in the chest in 1918. He survived the War.

#OTD, 1917, Sgt Ivor Rees, 11th Bn, SWB, was awarded the Victoria Cross for “most conspicuous bravery in attack” during the third Battle of Ypres. Sgt Rees successfully led his platoon under heavy fire to capture a German machine gun emplacement. He took thirty prisoners & captured an enemy gun.

For #WorldChocolateDay we have this 125-year-old bar of chocolate in a tin. It was brought back from South Africa by 2588 C/Sgt A E Pyne, who served with the South Wales Borderers, 3rd Royal Brecknock Bn. These tins were gifted to all troops serving in the Boer War (1899-1902) by Queen Victoria.
