Huge 9-inch moths, known as Black Witch Moths are migrating through Georgia this fall. Sometimes mistaken for bats because of their size, these moths have inspired a host of lore and legends. Want to know more? Check out this GA DNR column:

I found Cranefly Orchids! Native to most of America's eastern half and easy to identify in the winter because they're one of the few plants with green leaves. The underside is a bright purple. They prefer shady forests. Can you find any in your yard or nearby forested park?

The Phersophone Period is less than 10 hours of daylight. The timing is different for different latitudes, but the effect is the same: plants stop growing. While the official Phersophone Period is over for my home, my personal 'The sun IS coming back' happens with 11 hours of sunlight — Feb. 14.

Privet is invasive in Georgia and hosts plagues of whitefly families. My La Mancha goats love eating privet! Every year, I cut more branches, decreasing their food costs, decreasing the eventual whitefly population and decreasing the number of invasives in my yard.

I cleaned out the three bluebird boxes in my yard. Bluebirds scout out nest areas before moving in, so I like to finish this in December/January for any early home hunters. Sometimes I pretend to be a put-out property manager while I clean the last tenants' gross debris.

Jingle bell fetch. Santa's pushiest (non)reindeer knocked his antlers off as soon as possible. Second to capturing the frisbee.

Growing indoor lemons in Georgia. Not as hard as it might seem and the flowers smell amazing.

For my zone 8 friends: good time to take a walk outside and collect the dry golden rod seeds.
