People say "The Draft Horse" was Jones' first attempt at making a cartoon that's fast-paced and comedic, but I believe this short marked the first instance of that. Something kinda got to me for a while now. Part of me wants to revisit my top 5 Tom and Jerry list, as I feel like bias got to me when making it. I'll remind myself to revise it next year (and do a top 7), as after watching every single one from the H&B era, there are some shorts that I love now.

After more than 2.5 years, the final script for the final episode of THE MERRIE HISTORY OF LOONEY TUNES is complete. Written, edited, and finalized.

Being Tex Avery's last theatrical cartoon, it feels symbolic in some sense, as if he were seeking peace after creating his wacky and funny shorts for two decades. “Wholly Smoke” turns 87 today and is one of Tashlin’s best shorts of the '30s and among Porky’s finest of that era. As an anti-smoking PSA, it’s surprisingly effective, shifting from a bouncy tune to surreal, nightmarish imagery as Porky is tormented. Also, the song is a real treat to listen to.

And here's one more animation from Chiniquy from "Show Biz Bugs" and is where his talents shine as the dance animator. This is one of his most well-known animations of Bugs and Daffy dancing together in sync, and Daffy dancing to Jeepers Creepers with no one applauding him.

Here's another Chiniquy scene from "His Bitter Half" (one of my favourite Daffys). In this one, he animates the movements for all the characters to match a beat that fits great with the on-screen action. The timing is especially sharp at the end, when Daffy strikes a pose, only to get knocked out.

Animator of the Month goes to Gerry Chiniquy, one of Freleng’s most celebrated animators, best known for his work on dance scenes and actions that hit the beat perfectly. And yeah, he does Bugs' his tap-dance routine seen here in "Stage Door Cartoon" and later with Sam in "Bugs Bunny Rides Again".

I love how extended the fight sequence is, really strengthening the chemistry between Popeye and Bluto. You think Popeye gets the spinach and it’s all over, but no. It manages to squeeze out a lot of great energy before the fight is over. Cartoon: "The Royal Four-Flusher" (1947, Seymour Kneitel)

This short turned 75 yesterday and is still my favourite McKimson shorts to date. The square dancing sequence always kills every time I watch it and is one of Bugs' best methods to torment his adversaries by continuing the tune with some violently humourous slapstick.

So Claude Cat doesn't want to get beaten up by the bulldog, and then the cat doesn't want to eat Hubie and Bertie, and they don't wanna eat cheese. ...IT JUST DON'T ADD UP! Cartoon: "Cheese Chasers" (1951, Chuck Jones)

Here's another childhood classic. I remember seeing this at my cousin's when they had Boomerang, and getting a good chuckle when Jerry messes with the speed, which affects Tom's signing, then Tom hits him and Jerry throws a branded iron to his butt. Cartoon: "Texas Tom" (1950, Hanna-Barbera)

IMO, this is the strangest of Droopy's shorts. Not only does it look very UPA with the story and designs, but Droopy is a heckler stealing a band of fleas to play some dixieland music on the go (reminds me of a certain device that did something similar) Cartoon: "Dixieland Droopy" (1954, Tex Avery)

Today marks Betty Boop's 95th anniversary, so here's possibly one of her beloved shorts where she dances with the Old Man, set to Cab Calloway’s catchy tunes, in a jazz-fueled finale that’s creepy, silly, and unforgettable. Cartoon: "The Old Man of the Mountain" (1933, Dave Fleischer)

And here's Davis's short with the same premise. Unlike Avery's, where it's gag after gag, here it builds up to a point where it's a clear fight between Elmo and Blackie trying to impress Daisy Lou, but the former gets one-upped by the latter. Cartoon: "A Hick a Slick and a Chick" (1948, Art Davis)

So here we have a city vs country cartoon that has some great sight gags (standout moment being the bull's skin being ripped off). Art Davis directed a similar cartoon (which I'll showcase tomorrow), but this short makes a simple premise a lot funnier. Cartoon: "The Hick Chick" (1946, Tex Avery)

Watching this for the first time today, and I can’t believe I’d never seen it before. The animation is pure eye-candy, especially Jerry dancing with the dolls amid exquisite backgrounds. It really sets this one apart from the rest of the series. Cartoon: "Mouse in Manhattan" (1945, Hanna-Barbera)

This is a mean, twisted premise that teaches the lesson that being too greedy can be damaging (except the pig doesn't learn anyway). The gags showcasing all the machines the mad scientist uses to feed the pig are an entertaining piece with solid laughs. Cartoon: "Pigs is Pigs" (1937, Friz Freleng)

I feel like this short barely gets discussed and deserves a lot more attention. Great camera angles with the poor squirrel climbing up the stairs, and also some excellent timing showing the ways it struggles to open it up, which I can relate to. This is my second favourite Taz short, after his debut a few years prior, where his aggressive, dim-witted behaviour doesn't seem to be a match for Daffy's singing... and his greed. Cartoon: "Ducking the Devil" (1957, Robert McKimson)

Possibly one of the best Popeyes of the late 40s. Olive's tune is going to be an earworm and showcases her versatility as a character, moving beyond the damsel-in-distress cliché. And also, both the animation and colours are elegant as well. Cartoon: "Olive Oyl for President" (1948, Izzy Sparber)

If I ever do a top 5 cartoons featuring Spike marathon, then this would take one of the spots. This scene always gets me as Tom pretends to sound like a pup, only for Tyke to one-up him by giving a strong, but cute bark over a meow. Cartoon: "Love that Pup" (1949, Hanna-Barbera)

This is one cartoon I can relate to, where you try to live your life, but people around you start to tease the heck out of you. Same way here to the cat, and the scenes here are ridiculously funny, especially the bulldog faking his murder. Cartoon: "The Cat That Hated People" (1948, Tex Avery)

And here's one more. The ending scene in "Zoom and Bored" does make you feel sorry for the Coyote, who is dragged in with so much pain; not even the Road Runner has the heart to scare him to his doom. This is hilarious, but boy, do you feel the pain as well.

Looks like I missed a day, so time to post two Road Runner scenes like usual. Here's another one from "Stop! Look! and Hasten!" where his pop-up grate doesn't go up when the Road Runner is nearby, ends up chasing him on the tracks and gets hit by an actual train with the most amusing sign.

I honestly think this is his best Tom and Jerry cartoon Gene Deitch directed (which a lot of fans can agree with). Seems like more of the budget went into making the short funny and interesting in favour of having minimalist design work. Cartoon: "The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit" (1962, Gene Deitch)

No. 1: Rabbit Seasoning (1952) IMO, this is the BEST short in the Hunting Trilogy and my favourite Bugs short period. Pronoun trouble is the star of this cartoon. It shows Bugs' strength as a character, looking reserved, knowing that Daffy's ego leads to failure, making this all the funnier.

No. 2: "Hillbilly Hare" (1950) This short is addictively rewatchable to me and one I can never unsee to this day. The square dancing turned violent is possibly one of Bugs' best comedy routines to date, where he makes these hillbillies go nuts until they're beaten. Really funny stuff all round.

No. 3: "High Diving Hare" (1949) I believe this is the best Bugs vs Sam short, where Bugs has more to do here, staying one step ahead the whole time, tricking Sam into diving over and over in increasingly ridiculous ways. Even if Sam is about to win, Bugs will still one-up him by defying gravity.

Up next, my favourite Jones cartoon: "Rabbit of Seville" (1950) What's there to say that hasn't been said before? It's hard to pick a favourite scene because the whole thing is a masterpiece and really shows how far both Bugs and Elmer have come after 10 years of battling against each other.

Up next, my favourite Freleng Bugs short: "Baseball Bugs" (1946) This cartoon is a masterpiece and shows his strength against a larger adversary of foes, in this case, the Gashouse Gorillas. The ending is the highlight, containing a lot of NYC references, like keeping up with the papers.

Up next, my favourite McKimson Bugs short: "Rebel Rabbit" (1949) This is Bugs at his most sadistic, waging war on America just because the bounty on rabbits is insultingly low. There are so many great scenes to pull from, especially right after this clip, so I definitely recommend checking it out.

Let's kick off the marathon with Clampett's first Bugs short. Here, he’s more of a heckler as they were still seeing what works with him. The standout is Bugs' Elmer impression, which gained a lot of traction in recent years... I wonder why. Cartoon: "Wabbit Twouble" (1941, Tex Avery/Bob Clampett)

Here's another Pink Panther short I like. This one continues to maintain the simple yet abstract design that complements the gags well, which is a characteristic you'll see in many of DePatie–Freleng's works outside the Looney Tunes shorts. Cartoon: "Pink Pajamas" (1964, Friz Freleng/Hawley Pratt)

This short is notable for its experimental art direction, which resembles the style UPA would later adopt. Even the idea of Willoughby gaining strength from a hat feels like something you'd see from that studio. Cartoon: "Willoughby's Magic Hat" (1943, Bob Wickersham)

This short turns 89 today and is Tex Avery's oldest classic and a well-loved WB short. You have Owl Johnson singing the title song that easily sticks in your head, along with a sweet ending where his whole family dances along with him. Cartoon: "I Love To Singa" (1936, Tex Avery)

This is my favourite short in the "Tomorrow" series, packed with sight gags and stylish designs. The machine that answers all your kids’ questions is a standout, as it hilariously predicts today’s internet age, where we can ask anything we want. Cartoon: "The House Of Tomorrow" (1949, Tex Avery)

Pete Burness spent most of his time at Freleng's and McKimson's for the rest of his tenure at WB. This is his most memorable scene, seen here in "Curtain Razor," where a turtle (speaking with Mel Blanc's normal voice) claims to be "The Man of a Thousand Voices", however, Porky counts one less.

"Haredevil Hare" is the only Chuck Jones short Pete Burness animated. And yeah, his scene is easy to identify here due to how smooth and bouncy the movements are (almost looking like his Tom & Jerry works). I do love the animation, though, as it does give Bugs and K-9 more expressions.

The animator of the month is Pete Burness, best known for his work at MGM and Warner Bros. You can spot his style by the sharp facial transitions and smooth motion. While many of us consider "Baby Puss" to be the worst T&J cartoon of the 40s, I think this is his best work for the series.
