I’m literally baffled watching some of the data come in from category 5 hurricane Melissa. The hurricane is now sub 920mb and seems to still be strengthening.

It is interesting to think about how the most photogenic and decently visible tornadoes of the May 23rd, 2024 severe weather event was concentrated in such a small cluster of severe weather LSR's. Cell mergers and complex boundary interactions created a localized environment in SW OK. #wxsky

MUCAPE between 500-1000 J/kg supported an elevated hail threat within the last hour in Iowa as storms developed along a warm frontal boundary despite surface analysis exhibiting a relatively modest ability to produce sustained convection. Interesting hail event given low surface obs. #wxsky #iawx

My favorite part about not having a garage is when an area of 65+ dBz develops and engulfs your car parked outside at 4:40am. Good news is even though there was a crap ton of hail to where it started to accumulate it appeared to be mostly on the order of half inch to dime sized.

This is the take right here. I have seen so many people call this a “bust” or “underperformance”. Most of the tors from yesterday were sig tors and some had very prominent signs that they at least reached violent intensity. By far was this event a bust think calling day 2 high was needed.

A potentially violent tornado is underway about to hit Gorrdo, AL. 0 ZDR as well, with the debris ejection in the forward flank indicating that this tornado is incredibly strong. However, the shallow convection begs the question of how long this significant tornado can last. #ALwx #wxsky

Strong convergence signature and an intense, pronounced ZDR arch on the storm to the west near Tuscaloosa, AL demonstrates that tornadogenesis is imminent if the current environment surrounding the storm is able to sustain itself given the isolation and moving into an unperturbed area. #ALwx #wxsky

Really interesting activity happening in these supercells in Mississippi. A pronounced ZDR arch has been present during tornadogenesis with a deep CC drop and a pronounced TVS. What makes this interesting is how many significant tors are training after one another.

Even though I will probably be out cloud-watching on Friday, I do not know how convinced I am of the tornado threat at the moment with the limited moisture in eastern Iowa. Some models have the dew points creeping into the upper 50's and others in the low 50's. #iawx
