I started a new project called The Bibliophile. Short pieces about books—not reviews, but the objects, the people, and how they move through the world. First piece is live: The Physical Book: An Absurdity in the Digital World

Quite the successful haul from Houston on Independent Bookstore Day, limited, as always, by my suitcase. A nice bonus was a complimentary “mystery book” from Forgotten Lore Bookshop in Friendswood, which turned out to be a lovely Beckett trilogy.

The lives of book dealers Leona Rostenberg & Madeleine Stern read like a quaint story about two women and their dachshunds. What's missed is how their "fingertip feeling" reminds us that a Kindle is a filing cabinet, but a book is a guest in the room.

I had a discussion with a friend of mine who knows nothing about punk rock music and couldn't shut up about how great the new Billy Idol documentary is. We then had a 2hr discussion on the origins of the British punk scene. Him: "Did you know Billy Idol was in a band called Generation X?" Me: 🙄

Fun Fact: The U.S. purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1916 for $25 million in gold. The purchase was partly strategic as the U.S. wanted to prevent Germany from using the islands as a submarine base and to secure a stronger naval presence in the Caribbean.
