Criminal justice reform bills ranging from inmate rights to public safety passed the Virginia General Assembly and have received action from Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

Bills to foster maternal health care resources for pregnant and postpartum incarcerated women have recently received a response from the governor. HB 860 has been approved and HB 857 has received governor recommendations. Del. Rae Cousins, D-Richmond proposed both bills.

A Senate committee pushed for a study instead of moving forward a bill that would give the incarcerated a second chance if they meet certain qualifications. Sen. Michael Jones, D-Richmond, sponsored Senate Bill 222 to extend parole eligibility.

The 2026 session is winding down but lawmakers are still at work. Had the privilege of sitting in on a Senate Subcommittee meeting this morning where they discussed bills on topics such as toxic house plants, and hunting dogs. @vcucns.bsky.social
