Old Happy culture has left a lot of us feeling hollow. It tells us the same story, over and over again: if you just achieve these specific things, then you will find lasting happiness. Yet the evidence doesn’t back this up. It’s great to have goals. But make sure they lead to well-being.

Making choices to fulfill external expectations can lead to a sense of hollowness, frustration, loneliness, disconnection, and self-judgment. The next time you are making a small decision, pause and reflect on which option feels best in your body. Look for warmth, peace, stability, hope, or energy.

At any moment, we can pause and take a step back, getting curious about how we want to live instead. And then start living in that way. Right here — in this moment, by making one different choice, the choice to embrace our lives and live with courage, authenticity and compassion.

There are no overnight transformations.
