A great night is taking out a bunch of movies you like and just jumping around watching scenes you enjoy, like shuffling through favorite songs. Often I notice aspects of the filmmaking I’ve never noticed before. Most often, I just jam.

If filmmakers are going to keep using “Everything In It’s Right Place” in their movies I’m going to need someone to set a whole movie to Kid A so I can hear the whole album that loud at that level of fidelity.

I don’t know what the rest of the list is but two of my favorite vocal performances are Michael Keaton as “Porco Rosso” and Jake Johnson as “Peter B. Parker.”

My son’s Creature from the Black Lagoon birthday cake. I let Costco make the cake; I made the Creature. It was my son’s idea to make him terrorize the Sour Patch Kids.

The best thing recently is that my brother got me THE IRON GIANT on blu ray for Christmas. I watched it with my kids the other day, and now my toddler daughter has taken to calling me "my Iron Giant."

It would be a heckuva day, but the best way to see FIRE AND ASH is in 3D and immediately on the heels of THE WAY OF WATER. They really are one loooooong film. Cameron’s LOTR.

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN was my son's first "movie about movies" movie. I think it connected a lot of dots in his brain. At bedtime he was asking me production-related questions – costumes, primarily – about THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, and he wants to watch a making-of featurette tomorrow.

The best part of my six-year-old son's day today, as reported at dinner time, was watching SINGIN' IN THE RAIN for the first time.

My parents gave my son this Creature from the Black Lagoon action figure for Xmas (his favorite monster). It’s awesome. The box says 17+ but it’s just the same quality of action figure I had as a kid. His other “guys,” made for kids, are crap. They make crap for kids now and up-charge adults.

My kids are getting deep into North Pole lore this Christmas thanks to the Rankin & Bass boxset I found in my parents’ dvd cabinet.

PTA is correct not to want the 4K of BOOGIE NIGHTS to be any sharper than this; this is what movies looked like in 1997.

I find myself at a child’s Toy Story themed birthday party. They put army men on the cupcakes. My son took it off to eat the cupcake, and I had a visceral reaction when he started to throw the army man away.

My son knows the Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge comic but he doesn't know A Christmas Carol, so he thought the Pentatonix song about Scrooge is about the duck. So I told my wife he needs to watch A Christmas Carol. "With Muppets," she added. "WITH MUPPETS!?!" exclaimed my son, more confused than ever.

PREDATOR: BADLANDS - It’s Cameron’s (speculative) world and we’re all lucky to be living in it. I don’t mean to diminish what Trachtenberg is doing with the Predator series. It rocks. If you’d told me six years ago I’d ever care 1 iota about this property I’d have LOLed. Give this man an Avatar.

I have AKIRA on 4K and it’s great but really the best way to watch AKIRA is on a well-worn bootleg VHS that your best friend steals out of his older brother’s bedroom when you’re spending the night in third grade.

This is my annual post about how what I want most is a season-long, behind-the-scenes doc about the making of a season of The Great British Bake Off: three episodes on the pre-production process; three episodes on the filming of the contest itself; and three episodes on the post-production process.

My pitch for a Predator movie is Predator+Galaxy Quest/The Three Amigos/Tropic Thunder. A trio of shitty Yautja watches Earth movies and thinks they're real so they abduct action movie stars to help them kill their way into the Yautja elite.

I'm watching M:I - DEAD RECKONING today in anticipation of my blu-ray of M:I - THE FINAL RECKONING arriving tomorrow. I bet Buster Keaton would love knowing that more than a hundred years later filmmakers are still chasing his genius.
