Caravaggio’s portrait of Monsignor Matteo Barberini, the future Pope Urban VIII (reg. 1623-1644 is on public display for the first time at Palazzo Barberini in Rome. Portrait likely done ca.1599-1604.

Back to a rainy Naples today to examine the stratigraphy of this small scorza (the now visible main layer is unpublished). Also a pleasant surprise to be shown some of the unopened rolls being evaluated for imaging.

Back to the SNSP library at Castelnuovo to read Piaggio’s Memoirs. Written 1769-71, they provide information on the discovery and unravelling of the Herculaneum papyri. There is no full transcription or translation of the work.

Ovid would be proud.
