To enter the underworld in classical mythology, a person must be transported across the river Styx by the ferryman, Charon. There, the dead dwell forevermore as phantoms. In FFVII Rebirth, the party is taken to the domain of the Gi spectres by boat, ferried there by Gi Nattak.

In Chinese culture, the dragon (loong) and phoenix (fenghuang) can symbolise justice and loyalty, especially in the imperial household. When seen together, they represent opposing and balancing forces. This is reflected in FFXVI when the Phoenix rises to quell Bahamut’s rampage.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi says they seriously considered developing a Story DLC for FFVII Rebirth. However, they concluded that a DLC for the second part would impact the schedule and the overall quality of the final game. He says DLC beyond Part 3 could happen depending on fan demand and support.

Tifa’s endgame weapons in FFVII Rebirth are the Járngreipr, meaning “Iron Grippers” in Old Norse. They’re named after the gloves of Thor, the Norse god of storms. This may explain why the Járngreipr are found in the ToA’s Corridor of Currents, amid the Lifestream tempest.
