Jūren and Anraku's courage in the face of death won the Pure Land faith many converts, and the emperor was eventually forced to pardon Hōnen, acknowledging that the new sect could not be snuffed out. The current Anraku-ji was revived with the founding of Hōnen-in in 1681. #Japan

It seems that Matsumushi (died at 35) and Suzumushi (died at 45) fled to Kokawa-dera (粉河寺) in Kii Province (and then on to Aki Province). In 1212 Hōnen returned from exile and constructed a small temple called Jūren-zan Anraku-ji (住蓮山安楽寺) in memory of his disciples. #京都

To kill a priest was unthinkable, but the emperor would not be dissuaded. Anraku was taken to the Rokujō-kawara execution grounds (minus his manhood) and killed whilst he prayed. Jūren was likely executed in Omi Province. Even when beheaded he sung the nenbutsu for many minutes.

On the 9th day of the 2nd month in 1207 the emperor sentenced the disciples to death. If they recanted their faith they would be spared, but both men refused. It was rare for death sentences to be carried out, and this would be the first ordered by the emperor directly since 818.

Emperor Go-Toba accused Jūren and Anraku of seducing his concubines, but it's more likely the sisters had simply fled the hostile environment at court sewn by the emperor's favoritism. The incident also gave Go-Toba the excuse he needed to clamp down on Hōnen's popular new sect.

At 2am a few days later the 2 women escaped the palace and went to the small hermitage on Shishigatani where Hōnen's disciples lived. Here Matsumushi took the tonsure from a reluctant Jūren and Suzumushi from a hesitant Anraku. When the emperor returned he was beyond furious🤬

Having heard the rumours surrounding Hōnen, in 1206 (while the emperor was away), the concubines Matsumushi (松虫) and Suzumushi (鈴虫) went to Jōdo-ji (浄土寺) to see him preach. They were instantly captivated by his handsome young disciples and had a religious awakening. #Kyoto

❤️DEATH OF THE DISCIPLES💔 Hōnen was exiled by a displeased Emperor Go-Toba (後鳥羽天皇), but a far darker fate awaited his disciples Jūren (住蓮) and Anraku (安楽). While the emperor was on pilgrimage, it is said his 2 favourite concubines took holy orders under the young monks!

The Hōnen-in we know today was founded in 1681, long after Hōnen's death. Following Hōnen's exile and the persecution of "The Pure Land School" the original hut was abandoned, but local villagers kept the statue of Amida safe until a new temple was built hundreds of years later.

Early each morning at Hōnen-in 25 flowers (commonly camellia) are dedicated to a statue of Amida carved by Genshin (源信 942-1017). This ritual offering is known as 'Sange' (散華). The flowers represent the 25 bodhisattva who help Amida take the souls of the dead to paradise.

As visitors enter Hōnen-in they pass through the Byakusadan (白砂壇), 2 terraces of white sand (roughly 7m long, 3m wide and 10cm high). Said to symbolize water, the sand purifies the body and soul. Every 4 or 5 days a priest rakes new patterns, reflecting the weather or season.

💔🙏AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER👑🗡️ Banbukyō-ji (萬無教寺 aka Manmukyō-ji) sits on the Philosopher's Path beneath Zenki-san (善気山). Thanks to its links to Hōnen, it is better known as Hōnen-in, and because of the many camellia that grow here it's nicknamed Tsubaki-no-dera (椿の寺).
