As usual, the Grammys fuck up the rock, metal and alternative category. In that category, I pretty much only rely on the Nik Nocturnal Awards.

I have inched myself into trying out all this classic hip hop music. I may be as white as they get, but it doesn't mean I can't learn to appreciate what these artists make. I started with hearing the debut self-titled album by Run-DMC. It is good, though the rap flows are pretty simple for me.

I've spent way too long not drawing anything. I have two chapters of my fan-fiction AU done but since I resolved to always have companion illustrations, they're just sitting there. Alright: by Sunday I will try to have both of those illustrations completed.

I don't care what anyone thinks, this song is a masterpiece. "amo" is such a mixed album. But this final song is literally perfect. Great vocals and lyrics, acoustic guitar and strings that actually do things, fun sounding effects, an emotional guitar solo and a long outro to make you reflect.

As far as I know, I've never seen anyone try to make a design and draw the father of Huey from Paper Mario: Color Splash, "Mr. Can". Now that design and drawing exists.

Early sketches of recent art: Most of these are not long before the final product, but my original Wario sketch was from September. It's unusually good considering this was my first attempt at him. I did look at PaperMrio's interpretation of Wario, but made a lot of changes. And somehow, it worked.

A new thing is in progress. It's Paper Mario related, and of an existing character. But... I'm not sure if ANYONE has posted art of him. Sure, he's more of an implied character, but considering he's related to an important character, it's still interesting.

My first go at a hybrid drawing. That is, the important stuff on paper, and the background using digital. The lighting too, where I used a dark blurry brush and edited the image to have a dimmer, warmer look. This image is an accompanying illustration for the first "chapter" of my AO3 work.

The bloopy lead synth they use in this song is exactly like the one the Paper Mario people like to use.

When it comes to crushing guitar riffs and rhythms (and lovers of banshee screams), this song is a great one for that. And it's ironically from the band known as the artsy weird melodic metal band. They definitely have matured since then, but this old sound is still very fun for the metalheads.

Now that my Dimentio work is done, I want to make a drawing for my first "chapter" for the AO3 Color Splash AU. So far, I have written down two (introduction & prologue part 1)

First time making artwork of Dimentio, or really, any of the Super Paper Mario villains! I made some rough sketches before, but never sat down and made something like this for SPM. And to think it's the first Paper Mario game I played.

Self-harm lyrics in the bridge aside, this is a very interesting song since it gives a stronger old school rock sound with modern semi-electronic production. A very prominent bassline from Matt Kean and a short guitar solo from Lee Malia, and being one of the few songs without backing strings.

I'm having an increasing suspicion that a frequent of r/papermario is just farming for karma. They constantly delete their old posts that usually are pretty simple "I like this" or a ranking or something akin to that, and replace them later with similar posts.

Some People have said Tanabe retiring is the best thing to happen to the Paper Mario series. What's way bigger is something that happened a while ago: The infamous character supervisor team is gone.

About time to finally make an artwork of an iconic villain... well, at least iconic for the Mario RPGs. I've got a sketch down, now I just need to get something solid and of course, with the color.

The best way I'll describe Mr. Tanabe retiring: this is good news for all sides. Good for Tanabe, because he'll finally get to rest after decades of hard work. Good for the fans and younger developers, to let the new guard (e.g., Risa Tabata) in with fresh ideas and open minds.

Just need to say: This is what peak remixing sounds like. Fresh and new, gives a totally different vibe to the original, without being super cheesy, and preserving the original's soul.

My first and only large-scale fanfic work from a while back is now on AO3. Putting this here makes me interested in reviving the project and making it a real chaptered fiction. It was originally just a side project.

EVERY SCAR WILL BUILD MY THRONE (but now in video game OST form!) Pretty cool seeing how Oli Sykes' love of video games translates into contributing to the OSTs. That and their increasingly video-gamey hyperpop production that started this decade.

Wow, Deftones is actually really good. It's got that perfect mix of metal, shoegaze and post-hardcore. Hearing Around the Fur solidified that. That album has the meaty riffs, unique basslines, groovy drums, reverb effects, dramatic and attractive but uneasy-inducing singing, and piercing screams.

My newest work is done. 4 character artworks inspired by Origami King, based on a "what if King Olly and Olivia had parents?" scenario. My initial inspiration was from a thing "paperf.lat" made of Olivia back in August. Characters: King Olly (now Oli), Olivia, and the late King Orval and Queen Olive

A total acoustic jazz jam. It's a bit tiring how the acoustic guitar is so stereotypically assigned to calm pop ballad stuff. Let the blues jam energy flow out! I'm quite happy with how Andoh-san and the rest of T-Square made the funnest acoustic performance I've heard in a long time.
