I remain skeptical that engineers will investigate every alert if experience shows that most alerts are false alarms. Hard to build reliable systems that way.

Exceptionalizing antisemitism as the only acceptable form of bigotry to care about on campus is not only unfair to so many other marginalized groups who face bigotry; it's ultimately bad for Jews, too. Keeping Jews as the sole protected class of the government never works out for us in the end.

The desire for the "good old days" forgets that a lot of women were on Barbiturates and Pen-fen because someone decide that the problem wasn't that they were being oppressed and abused but that they weren't hiding it well

I am, but it’s fine, because every post is only one sentence, and I only put one space after commas.

Freedom of movement is a fundamental human right. Borders require constant, systemic violence. I am convinced, however many years from now it takes, we will look back at this barbaric system with the same antipathy as some countries' systems of internal passports and "papers please"

I wonder if congestion pricing will affect suburban attitudes to high density housing near commuter rail stations. Doesn’t help with the “I got mine / no more room” mentality, but maybe with the attitude that people who ride the train belong to a lower social class?

I was alarmed, until I figured out this is about neither networking nor statistics.

“dining sheds are legal if they have wheels” is a weird loophole, but I guess we can roll with it. Maybe a few pickup trucks with flowerbeds double parked on alternate sides as traffic calming?

This is why it’s important to clarify whether “tech” means technology or “VC-backed software companies”

My main interaction with healthcare is annual enrollment, and even that reveals the core problem of being asked to make decisions with serious consequences based on no information.

The key to ousting Adams is committing to running together and asking all supporters *not to rank Adams on their ballots.* Running an RCV race between people who are ideologically aligned means working together and building coalitions through all five slots on the ballot.

I had to teach high school students about files circa 2015. Took five minutes in the first week of class. Kind of wish I’d pushed for that first week of html lessons to become part of the non-elective curriculum for every student.

Finally read Joe Duffy’s retrospective on Midori OS this weekend. Cool ideas about exceptions, actors / message passing. Also hints of how MSR’s investment in Haskell makes it into their commercial products.

PV, heat pumps, LEDs, video phones. We we have the SF tech. Like the joke about passing up rescue by boat because we’re waiting for a miracle.
