One of the more rewarding experiences I've had as an artist was being contacted by a friend from high school that I hadn't seen in nearly 30 years to do a small commission for her husband's birthday. This was the painting, "The Grizz," oil on linen, 9"x12".

Just returned from a winter trip to Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone is an extraordinary place anytime of year, but in particular, in the winter. This little fox I had the pleasure of photographing was just another amazing moment during my time there.

Painting Tip of the Day: Having trouble with edges - soft vs hard, lost vs found? Try these basics first. 1) Soften edges that turn into shadow. 2) Lose edges at the peaks of highlights. 3) Soften edges anytime an edge passes behind another. 4) Soften any edges that go off the frame of reference.

Painting Tip of the Day: Use the largest brushes you can. They should make you a little uncomfortable. This will, over time, improve your brushwork and ability to say more with less — economy of stroke.

For anyone curious, a detail shot of a new painting. You can see the texture, broken color and variation of hues that small JPEGs can often eliminate. These aspects of my work are what give my paintings an impression of detail — especially when converted to small images for the web.
