Wow. I’ve just read the most powerfully coming-out piece by a student. It was heartbreaking, but also filled with strength and family support. This student is a hugely talented writer, and it’s a privilege to see them begin to recognise that. 💜

Physical books, but I’ve started listening to audiobooks on my commute (a touch dangerous as I picture the scenes when I listen/read). I often recommend audiobooks for students who struggle with reading /focus. #booksky

So the full title is COLOR TASTE TEXTURE: Recipes for Picky Eaters, Those with Food Aversion, and Anyone Who’s Ever Cringed at Food. I know that “picky eaters” is a loaded term, the sole purpose of it in the title is so it can be found by the most people. It’s used sparingly within the book itself.

And “Guy Fawkes Night” is celebrated in Aotearoa/NZ, which shows how far English propaganda from several hundred years ago reaches. Most of my students have no idea why it’s “celebrated” and when I tell them we used to make effigies of Fawkes and throw them on a communal bonfire, they’re horrified.

It just takes one complaint. Several times over my teaching career (and in different countries) specific parents have tried to get books I’ve taught banned, each time not even bothering to read them. One parent saw the word “Hell” in the blurb of Tomorrow When the War Began and complained. 📚
