I’ve spent the last month making three new music videos for some of our new songs that we’re working on. It’s always a fun process, but this last one was a challenge to finish. It’s always a nice dopamine hit when I toss another pile of notes and scripts in the trash and celebrate another one done.

Seaside contemplation: Greetings from Lavallette NJ

So what do superheroes, sea monsters, and snow globes have in common? They’re all scenes from a new video we’re working on for “Rescue,” another new song we’re pretty excited about. I thought I’d give a little preview! More details soon.

We skipped the July 4 show traffic and blew up our backyard instead.

This week is the anniversary of our debut album, LIFTOFF. I was really proud of this release, which wouldn’t have been possible without band mates Steve and Jake. We’re hoping to complete some new music in the near future, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

I’m definitely a fan of the Voyager probes (hell, I wrote a song about them). The probes survived a 50,000 Kelvin sphere, giving us info about the heliopause. I love the fact that a flying computer with 1977 tech is on its next step on an infinite journey, and is still teaching us new things.

I came to appreciate Brian Wilson’s music later on, but as an adult and a music maker, I was really inspired by how deep those post-surf recordings go. You can pull those songs apart and find new things about them each time. Thanks, Brian.

Next video, “Plastic Island,” a reggae(ish) song about the growing Pacific Garbage Patch, a growing mass of swirling plastic in the Pacific Ocean. I loved making the cartoon characters to show environmental horror in the cutest way possible. youtu.be/UhKlGP62uIc

Second single from LIFTOFF, this is the first version video for “The Green and the Gray.” This was early in our video making, but I think it came out pretty well. This one’s a personal song for me, since I’m between green and gray myself. youtu.be/Fn2isvmmku8

One of my favorites, “The Piano is Broken,” a story of writers block and projection. Sugar & Space did the artwork animatics. Legally, I’ll say that it’s not good to use sledgehammers to solve your problems, but it is therapeutic. So I’ve heard. youtu.be/-Yf9T40wELs

Our next lyric video, “When Forever’s Over.” I loved all of the parodies of classic video game characters that show up in this one — try to name them all! We got some big help from @doodlesbydan who designed our two main characters, and a bunch of our parody characters. youtu.be/d6ogt1B864o

Another on of the past videos from our debut. “Don’t Bother Me” is an extremel breakup song. I love how the stuff getting thrown out gets worse through the whole video.

As we get ready to release “Second Stage,” we’re looking back at some of the past videos from our debut. “In The New Old Days” is a weird sci-fi tale about future people who think our “simpler” times are the good old days. Clip below, full video on “U Tube”

I know a lot of other creator folks get that same feeling when they go back to something they made and don’t remember how they did it. I think this quote from Leonard Cohen is right. I think the trick is to recognize when you’re in the zone, and make the most of your time while you’re visiting.
