The first show I saw was Hockney’s ‘88 retrospective at Tate. Everything changed. 2017; surprised to see We Two Boys… in the BMAG Coming Out show. Sobbed in the gallery. The visceral power of art. April this year, Jen and I watched Portrait… at Whitechapel. Oh… Godspeed! You beautiful man.

Has anyone else “found” a copy of this…? Apparently there are 480 of them each one left in a charity shop by its creator - that eternal japester, Bill Drummond. Influenced “by the holy trinity of Delia Derbyshire, Wendy Carlos, and Yoko Ono” it repeatedly riffs on a Shanghai-La’s lyric.

With this account, frankly anything could happen.

Early morning Oscar. A buy on sight label that never fails to deliver. Perfect early Sunday morning music to accompany coffee and birdsong.

As the light fades (yet the heat remains) on another Saturday, King Oliver (again) offering the perfect soundtrack. That fabulous painting on the cover is by Jacob Lawrence.

Some of the things in that big blue bag from earlier were commercial releases, though often the type that came out in very limited numbers. I’ll post these in this thread. This one caught my eye as it is a new name on me. Really robust playing. This record was released in 1973.

The lost art of record collecting; homemade hot jazz and blues sleeves. All the records (often transcription discs) in this thread are housed in hand-drawn and hand-assembled jackets. True labours of love by the original collectors. This is a sub-set of folk art that deserves wider appreciation.

47 West 63rd deep groove in a 43 West 61st sleeve. Apparently these things matter. Even so, not an altogether bad boot sale find from back in the day.

Listened to Emily Watson of Desert Island Discs this morning. She chose this because for her it was the perfect soundtrack for travelling through London. Hard to disagree.

I suppose another plausible reason for this period being overlooked is throughly dreadful sleeves like this. I mean, come on guys you have been given the chance to create a sleeve for the Impulse! label. That Impulse! That legacy. Is this really the best you could do? You should be ashamed. 9305

Continuing with my KJ diversions. The sidelong title piece is fantastic.

Are these Impulse! Jarrett LPs with the Redman, Haden, Motion, etc. band overlooked nowadays? Although this live set was released a mere month before Bremen/Lausanne (which casts quite a shadow, I’ll admit) it couldn’t be more different. Recommended if you like a late Impulse! vibe.
