Glad to see so much love and interest for the Roger Nicholson dulcimer album yesterday. Of the many dulcimer records I have this could be my favourite. As good, if not better, than any of the folk greats we regularly celebrate.

Of all the discoveries yesterday this was the one I got most excited about. Zakir Hussain (with a large band) get their Orb on and travel deep into The Zen of Space. Just fantastic!

Not new but a longstanding part of the collection. Side one is from the early 50s, very R&B, extremely lo-fi; practically home recordings and the LP is mastered from the acetates. Side 2 is a 1973 concert. Oddly this is a box set, single LP but accompanied by an excellent book about Big Joe.

This is fascinating. The title translates as Mass for the Destitute and it was recorded at Christmas 1968 in the chapel of a leper treatment facility in Mali. The music is traditional in style and arranged (possibly composed, hard to tell from the notes) by Josê Bourgois.

Back to charity hot spot today - and it was healthily restocked. First up “Map of Our New Constellations” by Bunwinkies, on Feeding Tube. That last fact clinched it. Plaintive rustic folk in a gorgeous sleeve.

This is what Ivy and I are enjoying this evening. Beautiful music. More notes on the recording process used in the ALT, for those who like that sort of detail.

My dad lost their life partner recently and has been processing a lot of emotion through exploring new music. Delivered a little care package this afternoon. 💔

Went back to have a look at the second (previously unseen) half of that CD collection from last week. I was not disappointed. :)))

I haven’t bought any CDs in a while, but then a local store took in a huge and very interesting collection. Looked at the first half today and skimmed these off. It’s going to be a lovely Sunday. 😊

Offworld. Recorded at Sanna Bheag, the house built in 1927 by the pioneering photographer Mary (EM) Donaldson and her partner Isabel Bonus on the most westerly point of the British Mainland, in Scotland. Guitar, drums, tape loops. Fascinating music recorded in a fascinating place.

Right. Weekend starts now. Everything on the list is done and I had chance to pop into Oxfam, where this was awaiting me. Enigmatic clarinet and piano deep listening with some suitably deep low end. An awful lot quieter than the sleeve might suggest.

This week’s library expansion. The top two were remainders - been after the Ravilious & Co. for ages, just not happened on a copy. The others were from local charity shops. Ninth Street Women was something I’d also coveted. A fabulous book with some amazing photographs.

The origin text. Arguably every spiritual jazz album can trace its roots to here. A truly astonishing recording.

Oh me, oh my! Just the one very unexpected find in the local junk shop today. That’ll do!

Biblioteq Mdulair. An orchestra of 15 analogue function generators; which, it turns out sounds not unlike sticking a contact mic on the back of the fridge. Ultra-minimal ambient sound design, yet somehow soothing and undoubtedly hypnotic.

Continuing with today’s charity shop finds. Loren Connors - The Murder of Joan of Arc. Good music for twilight.

Rather nice screen print wraparound sleeve. “We like hot baths and sailing ships and recorded music and the internet, but we worry that we can't have them without exterminating half the species on Earth, or exploiting Asian sweatshop workers…

Ok. I made it through S1 of Dustbreeders and may come back to it later. Possibly. But now this. A very lo-fi home assembled sleeve with very lo-fi home assembled music within. Outsider, mystic, off-grid… collective psyche-tribal folk ambience. I expect this will get played a lot. Just my thing.

Fished a pile of very strange things out of a local charity shop this lunchtime. This is a new name on me though the hype sticker suggests a near 40 year existence. It also says that this is music for fans of Derek Bailey. Presumably fans who find Derek just far too middle of the road. 😳

The next one out of yesterday’s bag. 1981, San Antonio private press of self-penned country-soul tear-jerkers. This is proper good. Dwayne “Ears” Farrow has a great Glen Campbell like voice.

The many moods, perhaps, but the one and only album from Ann Gilbert. Her voice is interesting - a rather classical singing style in places, and then bouncy night club jazz and show tunes. Just my bag.
