🌈 Watch a rainbow dance with the sun 🧑🌦️ This rainbow is moves from west to east, opposite the direction of the sun. This isn't a coincidence, raindrops reflect sunlight like a mirror, so rainbows are always opposite the sun. 🔍 If you look close, you can see the rainbow sink lower as the sun rises.

⛈️ New Warnings and Watches Issued 🌧️ 🌧️ The latest update to our severe weather warnings and watches has been issued, with a number of new areas added: - 🟠 Heavy Rain Warning for Taranaki north of about Eltham, and the King Country.

🌞 Ata mārie Aotearoa 🌞 🌅 Its a pretty autumnal start to the day. Overnight temperatures were near average for this time of year, with a mix of single to low teens 6am temperatures. 🌦️ Its a little showery in western areas, but rain will spread up Te Waipounamu/the South Island today.

🌦️ Its a rare gorgeous day here in Pōneke/Wellington, and if we look to the skies we can see why 🕵️ 🌦️ Its a showery southwesterly, with dots of showers streaming into the west of the country. To the north you can see the showers that passed over Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland earlier this morning.

🌧️ Rain and wind incoming for the South Island🍃 🌧️ Fresh warnings have been issued for the South Island, with Heavy Rain and Strong Wind watches and warnings now in force. 🍃The Strong Wind Watch for coastal Otago and Southland expires soon, as winds are expected to ease over the next few hours.

🌞 Mōrena Aotearoa 🌧️ ⛈️ Its been a wet and wild night in the west and south of the South Island, with 756 lightning strikes over the last 12 hours and wind gusts of 100 km/h recorded in Invercargill recently. Things will ease off today as we head through the afternoon.

The weather from Cyclone Vaianu has now cleared from our shores. Now eyes turn to the west as showers move up the country. These could be heavy, with thunderstorms and hail, as a series of fronts roll in from the Tasman Sea.

11:30am update on Cyclone Vaianu. The centre is east of the Coromandel Peninsula now and moving steadily towards the Bay of Plenty coast. Below are some stats from the event so far.

The latest Cyclone Vaianu Severe Weather Watches and Warnings have been issued. Watches and warnings are still in force across the North Island and upper South Island, including Red Wind Warnings. Note: Eastern Bay of Plenty, Southern Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa are now under Orange Rain Warnings.

Cyclone Vaianu 9:30am Update: The Rain Radar shows the centre of Cyclone Vaianu spinning to the east of the country as it continues to sink southwards. It now lies about 100km east of Great Barrier Island.

Cyclone Vaianu 8:20am Update: This is what the satellite imagery from 7:30am shows, with the centre of Cyclone Vaianu (marked with a white x) visible to the northeast of the country and moving quickly south towards the Bay of Plenty.

Cyclone Vaianu 7:20am Update The strongest winds are yet to come as Cyclone Vaianu approaches the country. Areas such as Auckland won't see their strongest winds until this afternoon, as the wind shifts southwesterly behind the cyclone.
