The first day of meteorological autumn is starting off with a bang, or more accurately, a (cold) snap! 🥶 🌧️💨 Cold southerlies spread rain and cloud northwards 🌨️ Snow lowers to 800-1000m over the South Island this evening

❄️ Monday night is shaping up to be one of the coldest of the year so far ❄️ 🥶 Only Auckland and Northland barely avoid single digits with 10°C minimums. Inland areas are colder with Hamilton forecast to hit 4°C. Further south, Dunedin airport and Alexandra may drop to just 2°C.

🌞 Its a sunny day for most of the country, but spot where the showers are 🕵️ 🌦️ Clouds around Auckland hide some lurking showers, with a few around Gisborne and Wairoa as well. Showers are expected to pop up around Waikato and Waitomo this afternoon, with the chance of a thunderstorm or two.

🌀 First Tropical Cyclone of the Southwest Pacific season forms. Tropical Cyclone Urmil has just been named, located over Vanuatu as a Category 1 system. Once the system moves beyond Vanuatu, it is forecast to head into the open ocean. It is not expected to affect New Zealand.

🟡 Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for the central North Island, covering Bay of Plenty, inland parts of Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, Taupo, Taumarunui and Taihape. ⛈️ These thunderstorms could bring localised areas of very heavy rain and downpours through the second half of today.

Ata mārie Aotearoa, it's a tale of two islands this morning as a cold front works its way up the country. 🌡️ A 7am temperature of 18°C for Kaitaia, while Invercargill is a frigid 5°C. 📉 More cold air is on its way Sunday and Monday, some areas may see their first frost of the year.

A cold front continues up the west of the country today (Sunday), weakening as it goes, but bringing cloud and a few showers. In the east, a southerly wind approaches the North Island this afternoon. A low-pressure system spinning southeast of Dunedin moves away, allowing the sun to peak through.
