I earned my MS studying origami mechanisms and now that I have a laser module attached to my plotter I can continue some of the work I was doing back then! Precision fabrication is still a major challenge, but this Kresling Tower structure made from PET and parachute nylon worked pretty well.

Got the itch to work on a laser cutter mode for my plotter using this cheapo 5.5W laser module. Here's the first cut! I tried to compensate laser power for feed rate, but looks like I went too far.

Trying some more weird stuff involving manipulating STL data before translating it to SVG (and plotter gcode). The background is also an STL model to test that I am tweaking things correctly on a per-model basis.

These curves use an L-system inspired method like Hilbert & Peano space-filling curves. From the perspective of the pen, the line can go straight, or turn CW/CCW - with instructions encoded in a text string like "-2 +2 F1 +3 -1..." etc. The resulting line is then offset and duplicated. #PenPlotter

My neighborhood scooter kid was riding without handlebars, just holding onto the stick part! After confirming that it wasn't by choice and that he wanted a repair, I whipped up a replacement using a PVC pipe and some printed TPU grips. He assured me he, "doesn't do jumps" and he'd be careful!

Working on demos and catching bugs! I've added per-model scaling (which caught a bunch of bugs in my indexing system), and fixed some issues with flipped axes (I think). I've also realized that I can zoom in and out of the rendered scene for debugging which is great QoL improvement.

Looping back (pun intended) to these animations. This one needs a few more tweaks but I'm definitely liking it so far!

I've been playing around with a secondhand Rok espresso maker and naturally had to make some accessories. In addition to a funnel and distribution tool, I also made a quick sieve fractionation setup to refine the grounds that I get out of my cheap hand grinder. The results are outstanding! 1/

I whipped up a magnetic stir-plate! Still working on the control electronics - if the motor spins too fast, the magnetic stir bar just shakes instead of spinning so you need a wide range of speeds to accommodate viscosity. I filled the body with concrete, and added TPU gaskets to dampen vibrations.

Proof of concept! Drawn by a handmade robot on a whiteboard. The 44 unique drawings that make up this short animation took about 6 hours to plot! #PenPlotter

In the meantime, let me introduce you to my custom H-frame plotter! I built this using OpenBuilds extrusions and wheels, with 3D printed parts and an arduino uno running GRBL. The system has a shallow z-axis and custom mounts to allow for different tool heads, so it's more than just a #penplotter!

Still a lot of optimizing to do, but I am super happy with this result! It reads as so three-dimensional that it's hard to believe each frame is still just a line drawing. I can't wait to start plotting these, but it would take far too long to generate the gcode and plot before optimizing a bit more

Sneak peek of a full rotation that is currently being simulated. This was too good not to share! I'm quite pleased. Aliasing is an artifact of compression, I may lower the density of hatch marks to try to avoid this in the future.

No changes just another test case

More shading testing! So far there are no computed shadows, and since the shaded area is currently computed only by its orientation with respect to a light source, objects seem to pass light through them without casting a shadow at all. Still looks pretty imo!

Prototyping a method to add cross-hatching to my Python .stl perspective plotter code. So far, so computationally expensive! I suppose that's the cost of adding more vector lines. Gonna be dusting off the plotter again soon! #penplotter
