The first image shows the Great Blade, with Alkali Lake, in the lower Grand Coulee. The Great Blade is the longest blade of flood-eroded basalt within the Channeled Scabland of eastern Washington state. The second image shows great flood flow striations and potholes, just east of the Great Blade.

Silverstar Mountain, North Cascades, Washington.

In the North Cascade Mountains of Washington, Cutthroat Peak rises up behind a basin with larch trees showing their golden fall color. Many years ago, I climbed the south buttress of Cutthroat Peak, seen on the left side of this recent image. Those were the days of youth and adventure!

Steamboat Rock State Park, Grand Coulee, Washington, in false color infrared. I really like this image. Not only because of the water reflection, but also because of the gradation of infrared coloring in the trees (which were showing signs of fall).

South Fork Skagit River Estuary, taken yesterday. For over twenty years now, efforts have been underway to restore portions of this estuary so that juvenile salmon have better rearing grounds before venturing out into the ocean. These efforts benefit many species (e.g., orcas, eagles, etc.).

One more image of the north fork of the Skagit River, with its final bend, just before emptying into the bay. The Skagit River is glacially fed, which is the reason for the beautiful blue color. Those colors are especially vivid at this time of year.

Here are a couple more images from where the north fork Skagit River enters Skagit Bay. The river is glacially fed, hence the beautiful blue color. The sand channels extend more than a mile into the bay. There were many raptors around, as well as river otters, all looking for a fish meal or two.

Looking east, in false color infrared, from the top of Craft Island, Washington. Craft Island is the smallest of several basalt outcrops near the mouth of the north fork of the Skagit River. A short marshy trail leads to this nice overlook.

The final hairpin turn leading up to Washington Pass. Washington State route 20 crosses the rugged and beautiful North Cascade Mountains. This route was only completed in 1972. Out of the frame on the left are the Liberty Bell and Early Winter Spires peaks.
