The year is more or less finished so a summary of 2025, there was a lot of moth trapping in the field. So… I made 3,466 records 778 different species, 480 of those were moths. 129 species were new to me during 2025. Moths accounted for 74 new species for me so I now have 602 moths on my life list.

Trapped in a wooded valley on the South Coast of Guernsey last night. A small site. 69 species including a few very nice ones. Photo's of some of the new to me moths below. See Alt text for names.

Some moths from a La Societe Entomology Section outing to Grand Pre NR on 12th July. We ran 6 traps and captured 97 species of moth. The bug is one of the Saldidae - Shore Bugs - Chartoscirta cincta and these are a new species for Guernsey. Photo's labelled in Alt Text.

A few nice oce moths this morning. Not a huge number of migrants but a pair of Feline is pretty special and I assume migrant as I've never had one in 12 years of trapping here. Also Marbled White Spot rare for here, a few Small Mottled Willow, Dark Swordgrass as common migrants.

A search of leaf litter between Christmas and New Year, to fill in a gap on the map, provided several non-natives including Strumigenys perplexa and the tricky to ID Hypoponera eduardi. Outdoors in #Guernsey, 3rd location for the Hypoponera and 11th for the Strumigenys. #ants #hymenoptera

Any #beetle #Coleoptera folk around Bluesky? I think this keys towards Melinopterus sphacelatus but I am not certain. Could do better pictures if it wasn't moving so much... Found walking up a wall this morning near open farmland, #Guernsey.

This species is now plentiful in Guernsey, almost more so than other species combined in places.

Also found these in the same sample. Found 14 sieving litter so likely more I missed. Another new location, they are very much widespread. Strumigenys perplexa.

Found this in November in my lettuce which originated in Spain, so of course it's exciting to someone like me! Turns out to be Nesidiocoris tenuis which is new to the British Isles, just getting it added to the UKSI. They predate aphids etc so was probably trapped whilst eating its dinner...

Myrmica sabuleti lateral view of the head. I hope to be able to do some proper photographs of other small inverts in my collection over the winter. I am pretty sure I say that most winters so don't get too excited just yet! I have plenty of other work to be doing!

I will be adding the Orthoptera next as we check on the Guernsey species including the newest species added to the British Isles list in Summer '24 from a site in Guernsey, Tessellana tessellata, the Brown-spotted Bush-cricket. Bat detectors around the island suggest it may actually be widespread.

More ants... Messor capitatus were found on the #Guernsey cliff paths in July by Paul Brock and Andy Smith who were actually looking for another ant. I visited the area and observed workers carrying seeds back to the nest, protected by some major workers. The huge head and jaws apparent in images.

I'm hoping to do a bit more work on ants next year. Here are two Formica pratensis workers. One of the wood ant species, these build large nests on the #Guernsey cliffs. They are now extinct in the UK, so we are working to try and protect them.

I also do some intertidal and marine work with the Pan-species hat on. I quite enjoy poking about in rockpools and under rocks. These photo's from a foray in October on Guernsey's west coast. There are of course marine insects to be found as well as all of the normal species you would expect.

Some #moths from the cliff trap late October in #Guernsey. Nice to see different species by field trapping, garden traps tend to be quite similar. The weather suggests I might not be doing much more trapping this season, from experience the winter simply isn't worth the effort here.

Homemade Skinner Mk2 progress. Not wholly different to the Mk1 but with added stainless mesh to allow rain to drain if it rains in the night. Just need to fit the internal bits to rest the perspex and lights on now. #moths #lepidoptera #mothtrap
