This has been a rough few weeks for Filipinos. RIP to an icon of Filipino cinema, Ricky Davao. I’m deeply grateful to have met him. He was a brilliant actor and director, and someone who took the time share heartfelt stories with me about working with my late uncle, Lino Brocka.

I’m thinking back to this incredible screening of Lino Brocka’s Bona at the Academy Museum a few months ago. Watching Nora Aunor’s nuanced performance on a huge screen was exhilarating. It was easy to see how millions could look into her eyes and instantly see themselves. Rest in Peace Nora Aunor.

This really is the most fun classroom to teach in!

RIP Val Kilmer. I can’t believe it’s already been 13 years since I saw his one-man show Citizen Twain. His role in Real Genius was my favorite — one of the queerest non-queer movies of the ‘80s, as a nerdy kid it was magical to see nerds portrayed as cool.
