Last night, my 8-year-old son asked me to play a song from my band on our sound system. He wanted his visiting friend to listen to his dad. I played it cool, but it was a beautiful moment for me. I'll never forget it.

When I was at the university, if I ever felt particularly depressed, I would ditch class and just go off somewhere. Sometimes the movies, or the beach, or a quiet library somewhere. I wish I could do that today as a 40+ professional. Alas, those days are behind me.

My maternal grandfather was the sweetest man anyone could meet. He died suddenly at just 70, a couple of weeks shy of my 14th birthday. I still miss him, and it’s been almost 28 years.
