It feels like the majority of knowledge I gained from social studies classes in middle school about civics and American government is useless now. I was promised three branches of government and checks and balances.

Scene: In bed, Sunday morning. Camille has been lying on her side, scrolling on Instagram. A film bloopers account catches her fancy. She hasn’t moved in 45 minutes. She is not strong enough to fight the algorithms. The dark patterns consume some of our most skilled players.

I’m starting to think more people should understand/experience not everything works out the way you want it, and yet life still goes on. We can’t force labor on someone. I’d love to read new ones but the others already gave me much joy.

I had to explain to my 8 year olds what "smoking cigarettes" meant... at first I tried to explain with words, but that just sounded silly (how would you describe it to someone), so I showed them a photo and still blank faces. At least they both agreed it's dangerous. Talk about a culture shift.
