A repost... These two pieces were made from an old computer desk. 'Blue Bill' ~ This one reminded me of Mr Bill from the old SNL skit. 'Seg-Man-Ted' ~ Segments were cut from the desk to form 'slices' which were held together by horizontal dowels.

A repost... A couple of spoons carved from Ambrosia Maple. 'Ambrosia' is not a distinct specie of Maple... it is a discoloration caused by fungi which are carried by Ambrosia beetles as they bore into the wood.

A repost... 'Babanki Mask' ~ Wooden spoon carved in European Pear wood with BB eyes. Inspired by a Cameroon ceremonial elephant mask.

A repost... 'Aubergine' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Basswood, with pigments. I encountered the word 'aubergine' for the first time in reference to an Alice Walker novel. Come to find out... that's what the folk on the other side of the pond call an eggplant.

A repost... 'Balancing Act' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Bloodwood with figured Maple base. When set on a surface this spoon would roll over on its side so I fashioned a base for it.

A repost... 'Banded Snake' ~ Wooden spoon carved in York Gum Burl with Bloodwood bands and Ebony spacers. The 'banding' wasn't intended when I began carving this snake spoon. I somehow managed to snap the thing in two and I figured this was a good way to salvage the project.

A repost... 'BeSpoked' ~ A wooden spoon carved from an old cart wheel spoke that a friend brought me from France. I believe the wood is some type of Acacia wood. The wedge that helped to hold the spoke in place is featured in the spoon bowl.

A repost... A couple of spoons where a knot in the wood was used as an 'eye'. The first one is Australian Silky Oak and the second is Surinam Cherry (which really isn't a cherry at all).

A repost... 'Ebony with Birch Bark' ~ The handle of this spoon looks like 'cork' but it is actually pieces of Birch bark laminated together with a metal rod drilled through for strength. Not my favorite design... but the tactile quality of this experiment was superb.

A repost... These spoons were carved from seed pods from an Australian tree/shrub. Although most of the pods are wood-hard there are also areas that are covered with a velvety soft fuzzy material that feels sort of like a horse's muzzle.

A repost... 'Bottlebrush Gall' ~ A gall is somewhat like a burl... an abnormal growth on a tree usually caused by insects or disease. This one was on a branch brought down by one of the hurricanes visiting South Florida.

A repost... 'Braided' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Sapele wood. Sapele is very similar to Mahogany and is good for carving. The plan was to make the spoon look like it was woven but this particular piece of wood was very hard... so the plan changed.

A repost... 'Ebony Cannibal Fork' ~ The cannibals of the Fiji Islands crafted ceremonial forks which were used by high ranking society members for their... um,.. dinner. This one was carved in Ebony with silver dot inlay.

A repost... 'Cattails' ~ Carved in Conkerberry wood from Australia. The contrast between the rich ,orange heartwood and the lighter sapwood provided an interesting 'relief carving' experiment.

A repost... All of these spoons were carved from Cherry burl. A burl is an abnormal growth on a tree that can be caused by damage, insect or disease. The wood grain inside can be quite beautiful.

A repost... 'Cactus Skeleton' ~ Cholla (cactus skeleton with a Wenge wood bowl. 'Cherry Crotch' ~ A tree 'crotch' is where two trunks separate as they grow, creating a more highly figured grain to the wood.
