If we don't want to change up the institutions, norms, and mechanisms of society, we should be honest about the idea that we don't *want* to make the world more equal, inclusive, informed, or democratic.

Making the world more equal, more empathetic, more inclusive, and more informed requires remaking the institutions that have upheld existing inequalities and oppression. Everywhere else we call this level of change innovation. We need social innovation too.

It took me too long to realize that even some people who aren't raging conservatives are comforted by existing hierarchies and societal institutions and want to maintain them despite their obviously causing generational harm. For them, enough change to correct for those harms is extremism.
