Having "good breadth" - defined here as the number of sectors outperforming the index - sounds like it's important (LHS) but it isn't. In the past decade, the banger years have been led by only 2-3 of 11 sectors (RHS). So, 75-80% of the sectors underperform most years

Breadth is still both bad and good. There are many ways to slice the breadth cake, which one matters will be obvious in hindsight

Breadth is either the best or the worst, either confirming trend or warning of a reversal. This is every cycle ever
