I was surprised where digging into “no two games are alike” led me. The idea that games play with variation and variability, and what’s important is “how” they play with variation is what differentiates them. #gamedesign

The idea of “concise games” is something that’s been bouncing around in my head for a while. Games that are direct, don’t have a ton of systems or meta structures and can be played pretty quickly.

What does “no two games are the same” mean? I’ve seen this moniker on board games the entire time I’ve been a part of it but what defines same-ness? And how same does something have to not be before it becomes different enough? And how different do we want games to be? #gamedesign #boardgames

I used to believe that asynchronous board game play was a great way to lessen time demands but I think I’ve totally changed my mind. For the most part live, short board games on board game arena are way more fun and easier to fit in. Asynchronous games are a different experience. #gamedesign

Putting some words together for how good @cipherzerogame.com is was fun. It occupies this really neat space between truly brain burning puzzles and the daily puzzles (like Wordle) that are more aesthetic than challenging. And I love all the flourishes that made it into the game. A Gem

My review for #CipherZero is up! Just an excellent game that matches wits with truly brain burning puzzles but has the vibe of sipping coffee and sitting down to puzzle on a relaxing weekend morning.

Whale Riders is the second recommendation @sowronggames.bsky.social has crushed for me, the first being Ginkgopolis. What an incredible game. Just so fun and direct. Captures all of these neat concepts around contract fulfillment, hand management, a bit of racing mixed in. Loved.

@cipherzerogame.com is so good. What a satisfying set of puzzles, excellent sound effects, background and music. Highly recommend.

Played another round of Iliad over drinks. Hit the sweet spot this time. Perfect way to wile away half an hour an excellent conversation. 10/10 perfect summer evening #boardgame
