Science is so fun to teach because it naturally leans into student questions. How does this work? Why does this work? How can it work better? Sure, sometimes I have to untrain them a little if they have been taught there is only one correct answer.

Today marks the end of my 13th year teaching sixth grade science (and my 19th in education overall). It was a really good year—full of creative and clever students, supportive admin, and absolutely amazing colleagues. Grateful for being able to do this work. It is the hardest job but the best job.

Want to get kids to focus on the learning and not just checking a box to get the work done? - Make sure your language matches. Try “What did you learn today?” instead of “Are you finished with your work?” - Minimize or stop grading formative work. Emphasize that it is practice.

Spent the bulk of the day conferencing with kids about grades. This group of sixth grade scientists is awesome, but this last set of standards really threw them for a loop. We needed some extra time, and at the end of the year, that’s really rough.

Assessments let us determine where the learning is. Sometimes that is just for feedback, for both student and teacher. Sometimes that is to make it official and report it out to others. Both have value. #edusky #sblchat

We are always teaching. They are always learning. For example, today they learned that if they tell me that I look tired, they get an earful about circadian rhythms and why we shouldn’t do this whole time change thing. That’s science, right?

If you didn’t do any prep work for the time change (like me) for your own kid, just know that sunlight helps reset circadian rhythms. So parents, get your kid up and exposed to sunlight early for the next few days (if possible). Teachers, open blinds if you can (if you have windows, that is).

Leadership doesn’t have to be loud. In the classroom, some of my best leaders have been the quiet kids. Why? They know how to listen.

I need some neuroscience help. Anybody have a reliable source for how long a kid can plan ahead by age? For example, an average 10-year-old can plan ahead by 1-3 days. I found a stat similar to this, but the source wasn’t good. Thanks in advance! #neuroscience #adolescentbrain #braindevelopment

Kids are always more than a test score, a grade, or a survey response. Can you use that stuff as evidence? Sure. Just don’t forget the evidence right in front of your face. People are so much more than just a number on a page.

We had a district PD day last week, and I can’t stop thinking about the stuff I learned in one session. Why? Because it was my fellow teachers presenting, not an educational company. Teachers inspiring teachers. More of this please.

There is nothing more fun to watch than a curious kid. In the middle of physics, and they are all busy designing and building cardboard arcade games to demonstrate Newton’s laws. It’s just so amazing to watch.
