Just heard a screaming noise coming out of the hedgerows and saw a young Rabbit and its mum. Thought the mum was attacking the baby until I saw this Stoat peering at me. Mum must have been trying to protect it

Wonderful wildlife walk this morning in Marbury. The Stoat was the highlight. Also Song & Mistle Thrushes, a posing Greenfinch, Little & Great-Crested Grebes, Teal, Great White Egret, Tufted Duck, Pinkies, Kingfisher, heard my first Siskins of the Autumn, Blackcap, Chiffchaffs, Ravens #ukbirding

As for "stoat"... it's messier. That "hop" connection is the best explanation we have, given that: - Old Norse has a similar word, "stútr", meaning "young or castrated bull" - there's a Scottish English verb "to stot", "to bounce (around)" or "to leap with all 4 legs at once", which stoats do A LOT.

NOW! If you wanna dig deeper into "ermine" and "stoat": Old English "hearma" & Old High German "harmo" have relatives in Latvian "sermulis"/"sermuls" & Lithuanian "šermuonėlis" (+ old/dialect "šarmuõ, šermuõ") (there's even two Lithuanian songs that begin with, "Tū šermuonėli", "thou, ermine"!).

That would be "Hermelin". Related (through French) to "ermine", it's a derivative of Old High German (a.k.a. 1200-year-old German) "harmo". The Old English word for the animal, "hearma", which would've become "herm" in modern English, was lost. "Stoat" probably comes from a word meaning "to hop".

Stoats in media are rare, but what is almost unheard of are fictional stoats that change coats across the seasons. They are either permanently in summer or (more often) winter. Okojo-San is a very notable exception

it's been pretty revelatory that in order to do Kirk the kindness of painting him in a wholesome light here on the hour of his death, one must go to gymnastic lengths to avoid any mention of his literal statements and beliefs which is pretty odd for a celebrated debater

What we hope is that history looks back on this dark era as an aberration. What we fear is that we are so warped by this era that history ultimately sees the era of progress that came before it as the aberration.

The thing about using Senate obstruction tools is that it's win-win for liberals. Either you successfully slow down or block action by Trump. Or you get the Republicans in the Senate to weaken or abolish the filibuster. Either thing is an improvement over the status quo.
