It’s interesting. I mentioned to a few work friends and acquaintances that I didn’t know were into reading that I was doing a group read with a BlueSky book club and SO many were very interested. I’ve breaks is strange ways sometimes. 📖

Took a 20 min break this morning and made a big batch of chicken chili with black beans and Jiffy Cornbread. Once 12 noon hits it is all over for you bitches.

Some famous comedian: If you are ever wondering who in your relationship is "in charge" then the next time you get up to turn off the bedroom light, look back at the bed and THAT is who is in charge. :-)

I broke the string in a mala bracelet in my office about 3 weeks ago and my cats keep finding 'one more' of the beads to play with. The sound of a bead rolling around on the floor now haunts my dreams.

I'd love to see a short experiment here at Bluesky where they allow Rich Text in posts just to see how long it took for everyone to start using all bold so their posts stand out.

My most underrated skeet. I’m realistic. Most of my “clever” posts are borderline at best but this one was an all timer that never got its due respect.

I have to say that once I heard about Moby and Natalie Portman I can’t read the words “Moby Dick” without thinking “Moby is a Dick.” 🐳📖

I wasn’t quite ready for how poetic Melville’s language was. When I tried to read Moby Dick as a kid it just seemed “old fashioned” but now it has what can only be an intentional lyricism. 🐳📖

Menu from Sourdough Lil’s in Westport WA, which was a whaling port at one time. This is from the mid 1970s. The Dick Ultican in the story on the back cover was my grandfathers uncle. Good news ladies, you could smoke here while you enjoyed a $3 salmon and a cup of Sanka! :-) 🐳

OK. The group feed is setup and ready to go for February. Let me know if you'd like to be added. "A child said, What is the grass? Fetching it to me with full hands; How could I answer the child?... I do not know what it is any more than he." - Song of Myself 📖

Hey, who remembers Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH? It was a read-a-long book I read with our teachers in 4th or 5th grade and then I read it to each of my (now adult) kids when they were like 7. Reading that book to a kid is an amazing thing to watch. Their feelings are right there on their faces.📖

I have to say Melville has so perfectly captured my life long feelings about sleeping in a cold room but with heavy blankets that I think I have never felt more 'seen' by a book in my life. People always looked at me oddly when I mention it but here, finally, is literary vindication! 🐳

If someone else in the group knows this person you might let them know that their settings are such that people in the group cannot reply? 🐳 to answer their question: I see 'them' as a placeholder for ANYONE that talks about preferring warm climates. Ismael wants to generate his own heat. :-)

OK. The Month of Dick is off and running so I thought I'd check interest about a Leaves of Grass group for next month. Im thinking the shorter, 1855 version with a schedule that looks something like the image below. I was thinking the name could be something like "Walt's Lawn and Landscaping"🌿 📖🐳

I have finally curated my block list subscriptions and block words to the point where if I dont go on the 'Discover' feed I see almost nothing terrible on Bluesky. I see only art, literature, photography, etc. I dont come here to get upset. I come here to relax.

I love how Melville, in the first 5 chapters of 🐳 Moby Dick, invents Abstract Expressionist Painting and lays the groundwork for socialism all while doing everything short of just saying his two main characters are gay.

🐋🐳 Reminder that I have uploaded this to add the Month of Dick to your Outlook or Google calendars as recurring daily events with the day's chapters. Note: There is an error on TODAY's event where it says to read 3-5. It should have been 3-4. :-)

OK. This is my first read of Moby Dick so I have to just say that if we get to the end and Ishmael wakes up in bed next to Suzanne Pleshette I'm going to be a little disappointed. 🐳🐋

I just watched a trucker use his compression brake going UP HILL. Came to an almost complete stop and blocked traffic while he ground gears trying to get going again. I think they will literally give CDLs to anyone now.

This is a very cool edition of Moby Dick. It footnotes a LOT of the more obscure words and phrases and includes several reviews, biographical sketches and papers that discuss the themes and such. 🐳#md

I hate that we live in a society where pedestrians routinely give drivers a “thank you” wave for stopping at a stop sign and that this behavior is SO ubiquitous that some drivers get pissy when you DON’T wave.

Ate a hot dog on a NYC street corner next to Tony Shaloub while he also ate a hot dog. Made eye contact a few times. As I finished I told him I was a fan. He thanked me for not making a fuss as nobody else had clocked him yet. Nice guy

I’m 60 pages into Pride and Prejudice and am very disappointed that society was so good at pigeon-holing it as “chic lit.” Maybe I’m just more open to things as I’m aging but this shit is REALLY good!!! I just ordered the Norton Critical editions of the rest of Austen’s books!
