Region working to enhance hurricane forecasting capabilities Barbados and its Caribbean neighbours are working to strengthen and improve the region’s hurricane forecasting capabilities. As part of the 2025 International Challenger Mission Project, an ocean glider, an unmanned underwater vehicle used for ocean science, was deployed 10 kilometres offshore. The unique scientific initiative is being led by the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), in collaboration with Rutgers University’s Centre for Ocean Observing Leadership, the University of the Virgin Islands, and the IOC of UNESCO Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions. Principal of the CIMH, Dr. David Farrell, says the project represents a fundamental step in enhancing the region’s marine forecasting capacity. He was speaking during a media briefing held at the Barbados Blue Dive Shop, Aquatic Gap, Needham’s Point. Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University, Scott Glenn, described the effort as a historic occasion for Barbados. He added that the glider will join others already operating in various parts of the region.
