Right now, New Hampshire lawmakers are deciding whether or not to ban nearly every kind of flag in NH public schools — yes, really. If passed, HB 1132 would chill and restrict the free speech and expression rights of students and teachers, with very limited exceptions for even classroom lessons.

Last week we were on the front steps of the U.S. Supreme Court to defend birthright citizenship, which is clearly enshrined in the 14th Amendment and has been the law of the land for over 150 years. Our argument was clear: the Constitution, not the president, decides who is an American citizen.

For the third time in the last two years, NH lawmakers are considering yet another unconstitutional book ban that would restrict free speech and create avenues for one sole parent to censor content they disagree with for all students.

VICTORY: Last night, the residents of Gorham and Hampton passed warrant articles opposing 287(g) agreements from existing in their communities. These agreements, which are major tools for the Trump administration's deportation machine, deputize certain law enforcement officers to act as ICE agents.

NH students have a right to an equitable education that teaches them about a variety of ideas and perspectives, and educators in our state should be able to provide them with that education without fear of penalization or litigation.

At least eight people have died in ICE's custody this year. ICE has a history of abusive conditions and medical neglect in immigration detention, and the Trump administration's rush to expand detention capacity has only made matters worse.
