Happy New Year everyone. Just starting on this year's Kleistwahr album and back in the studio with Ramleh next month.

Even More Films I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020). Directed by Charlie Kaufman Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette and David Thewlis star, so the acting is spot on. Plemons takes Buckley to meet his parents. Once there things get weird. It's all in the mind of a janitor it seems.

My favourite film this year was Radu Jude's Kontinetal '25. I also enjoyed:- The Girl with the Needle Steve Train Dreams Bugonia Bring Her Back Probably lots of others I've forgotten.

Even More Films Goké, Bodysnatcher from Hell (1968). Directed by Hajime Sato. Demented sci fi/horror. A hijacked plane is hit by a UFO in a psychedelic sky. The hijacker gets an alien implant in the head. The other survivors fight a lot. Much weirdness. Ridiculously entertaining. Free on YouTube.

Even More Films The Mastermind (2025). Directed by Kelly Reichardt Kelly Reichardt has a unique style and this time she has put that style together with a heist gone wrong type of film. Josh O'Connor is the loser son of a police chief who bungles the theft of four paintings. Things don't go well.

Even More Films Peripheral (2018). Directed by Paul Hyett Much better than reviews would have you believe. Hannah Arterton is Bobbi, a writer who is persuaded to use an AI machine to help write her next book. Bad idea. It doesn't go well. It's well done, creepy and with some good, surreal scenes.

Even More Films German Gothic horror set in Hungary. Laurin begins to see in her mind why the local children are disappearing. It's a creepy, disturbing film. There are some great sequences that show how you can make a clever, imaginative and darkly beautiful film with little money. Impressive.

Great final night of our tour with Clock DVA last night at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield. Thanks to the fantastically helpful and friendly staff. That's how you run a venue. Thanks to everyone who came last night, or to Manchester or London and to Clock DVA for putting up with us.

Even More Films The Hired Hand (1971). Directed by Peter Fonda Stunning western that stars Fonda and the always great Warren Oates. Beautiful to look at. Great Bruce Langhorne music. Plus it's 1971 so you have no idea how it will end. Dreamlike disolves and slow motion. Just great. On YouTube.

Even More Films Himizu (2011). Directed by Sion Sono I love Sion Sono. This is another great one. Two teenage schoolchildren whose parents either neglect or abuse them are brought together in the wake of the Fukushima disaster. Unlike anything else except maybe another Sono film. Truly superb.

Even More Films War of the Worlds: Next Century (1981). Directed by Piotr Szulkin Szulkin's sort of sequel to War of the Worlds. Dedicated to H.G.Wells and Orson Welles. The next century is fast approaching and the Martians are back. It's a satire about TV, manipulation and invasions. Terrific.

Even More Films Shadow of Fire (2023). Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto Tsukamoto is known for Tetsuo and A Snake of June. This is a recent one set in Japan in 1946. A young boy lives with a prostitute and then goes off with a man bent on revenge, who uses him to help, as the boy has found a gun.

Even More Films The Face of Darkness (1976). Directed by Ian F. H. Lloyd This is a supernatural horror short - 57 minutes. Lennard Pearce from Only Fools and Horses is a pompous MP who wants to bring back the death penalty and finds a way to make an undead man help him, but he bodges the ritual.

Even More Films Steve (2025). Directed by Tim Mielants Excellent film starring Cillian Murphy. It's about a school for boys deemed uncontrollable. Murphy is Steve the head teacher. Brilliant with the boys but with his own secret issues. Some brilliant young actors. On Netflix. Unmissable stuff.

Even More Films Golem (1980). Directed by Piotr Szulkin Absurdist Polish film starring Marek Walczewski as Pernat. A confused man being interrogated about a murder he knows nothing about. Reminiscent of Brazil at times. Kafka-esque. It's confusing but endlessly fascinating. On MUBI in the UK.

Even More Films Interrogation (1982/1989). Directed by Ryszard Bugajski Polish nightmare of a film from 1982. Banned until 1989. Set in early '50s Poland, a woman (an astonishing Krystyna Janda) is abducted by the secret police who try to force confessions out of her, but she is a force of nature

The brand new Kleistwahr CD The Battlefield Is Everywhere has landed at Fourth Dimension. I will have copies soon. This is the tenth in the annual Kleistwahr albums project. 8 new tracks. Obviously, I think it's the best one yet, but then I would. Beautiful artwork by Michael Boul.

Even More Films The Panic in Needle Park (1971). Directed by Jerry Schatzberg The film that got Al Pacino the part in The Godfather. It's not hard to see why. He's junkie Bobby. Kitty Winn is homeless, soon to be junkie Helen. They fall in love with drugs and each other. It has a 70s ending.

Even More Films Detachment (2011). Directed by Tony Kaye A drama, on the surface, about the failure of the American school system, directed by the controversial Tony Kaye, who directs in a very unusual but effective way here. Mostly depressing but with glimmers of hope. On Prime in the UK.

Even More Films Marketa Lazarova (1967). Directed by František Vláčil Epic black and white Czech film set in the 13th Century. The Christians are coming. A man's daughter is kidnapped and violence preceeds and follows. The soundtrack is fantastic. It's an astonishing piece of filmmaking.

Even More Films A Candle for the Devil (1973). Directed by Eugenio Martin Spanish horror with Judy Geeson. She plays Laura, who arrives at a hotel to meet her sister. However, her sister is dead. Killed by one of the women owners who can't stand women she finds depraved. More death follows.

Even More Films The End of August at the Hotel Ozone (1967). Directed by Jan Schmidt Black and white Czech post-apocalyptic film. It avoids the usual post-apocalyptic film tropes in favour of something more likely, more bleak and more hopeless. Beautifully filmed and acted. Free on YouTube.

Even More Films Song for a Raggy Boy (2003). Directed by Aisling Walsh Catholic abuse of boys at a reform school in 1939 Ireland. Aidan Quinn stars in the real story of a teacher who faught for his pupils against the violence of Iain Glen's Brother John. Glen is truly terrifying. Brutal.

Even More Films Big Boys Don't Cry (2020). Directed by Steve Crowhurst This is a grim tale starring Michael Socha, surely one of the UK's best actors. He plays Paul Connolly, on whose book the film is based. We flash back to his time at a children's home where he and others were abused. Grim.

Got myself a copy and I'm starting it today. Surprisingly, under 300 pages, but I'm a slow reader. Not a Slow Learner though hopefully.

Even More Films The Big Racket (1976). Directed by Enzo G. Castellari Superb Italian crime/revenge film. Fabio Testi stars as a policeman trying to bring down a vicious gang. It's pretty brutal. There are a few light moments, but it's mostly gritty and bleak as hell. Highly recommended.

Even More Films Anguish (1987). Directed by Bigas Luna Black comedy horror starring Zelda Rubinstein as a mother who gets her son to kill and bring her eyes. It’s a gory, unpleasant, quite clever low-budget film. Kind of played for laughs and manages to be hugely entertaining. Great ending too.

Even More Films Toxic (2024). Directed by Saulė Bliuvaitė Lithuanian film about two girls in a poor, remote Lithuanian town who see a dodgy modelling agency as their way out. They start out fighting but bond as the film progresses. Their serious, unsmiling faces are chilling. Well worth a look.

Very happy to be on this bill. Should be a great night.

Even More Films Time of the Wolf (2003). Directed by Michael Haneke Set in the future after some unnamed disaster, the ever reliable Isabelle Huppert's husband is killed and she and her children must find safety. It feels horribly plausible. Haneke does science fiction and does it expertly.

Even More Films Dead Dicks (2019). Directed by Chris Bavota and Lee Paula Springer A woman visits her mentally ill brother and finds him dead in a closet. Then he appears behind her, naked. Every time he kills himself, he is reborn. Actually a moving film about the burden of mental illness.

Almost a new Cardiacs album. Huge congratulations to Jim Smith and a cast of thousands for finally finishing and releasing LSD, the double album Tim Smith was putting together when he had his stroke. Massed vocals stand in where Tim hadn't recorded vocals yet. One of my albums of the year for sure.

Even More Films She Dies Tomorrow (2020). Directed by Amy Seimetz A woman has an overwhelming feeling that she will die the next day. Her feelings cause a chain reaction. It seems to be about how we keep going, knowing it could end anytime. Many will hate the ending. I liked it. Free on TUBI.

Even More Films Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976). Directed by Ruggero Deodato An extreme Italian version of Starsky & Hutch by the man who made Cannibal Holocaust, written by Fernando di Leo. Hugely amoral cops wreak havoc and keep getting away with it. Worryingly entertaining. On YouTube.

Even More Films The Pyx (1973). Directed by Harvey Hart Canadian horror/thriller with Christopher Plummer as a detective and the wonderful Karen Black as a dead junkie prostitute who appears in flashbacks. Not much loved, but I like its bleak, sorrowful mood and Black is superb. On Prime.

Even More Films From Beyond (1986). Directed by Stuart Gordon Gordon's follow-up to Re-Animator is a lot less loved but has a lot to recommend it. Based on H.P.Lovecraft. It's very 80s. Lots of scenes of sex and gore. It's very over-the-top and hugely entertaining. Available on Prime in the UK.

Even More Films Containment (2015). Directed by Neil Mcenery-West A man wakes up to find himself stuck in his apartment. The door and windows are glued shut. The whole block is the same and then they see the hazmat suits. Low-budget. British. Mostly single location but very watchable. On Netflix

Even More Films Milano Calibro 9 (1972). Directed by Fernando di Leo Powerful Italian thriller in the polizzi style. Great soundtrack too. A man is released from prison and everyone thinks he has hidden money from a robbery. Gastone Moschin is great in the main role. Exciting and quite violent.

Even More Films Transmission (2023). Directed by Michael Hurst This is a low-budget horror film with a fair bit of originality to it. A man sits down to watch TV and keeps flicking between channels. As time goes on, we realise that everything on each channel is connected and not in a good way.
