Even More Films Mother of Flies (2025). Directed by John Adams, Zelda Adams and Toby Poser Another Adams Family film. They act, direct, edit, write and do all the music. In this one Poser is a healer. Zelda has cancer. Can she heal her or does she have other motives? Their best yet.

Even More Films Silence and Cry (1968). Directed by Miklós Janscó I posted about My Way Home before and Klassiki also have this film. This one is set just after the end of WWI. The communists have been ousted in Hungary and are being hunted down. One hides on a farm. Bleak and staggering.

Even More Films In My Skin (2002). Directed by Marina De Van French body horror. De Van directs, writes and stars in a remarkable debut feature. She plays Esther who badly injures her leg and becomes obsessed by the wound. Enlarging it and then moving on to her arm. Fascinating and repulsive.

Even More Films My Way Home (1965). Directed by Miklós Janscó Hungarian film set near the end of World War II. Andras Kozak plays a Hungarian student who may have been fighting with the Hungarians. He ends up on a farm guarded by a young Russian. They become friends until things go bad. Superb.

Even More Films Good Time (2017). Directed by Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie Excellent crime thriller from the Safdies. Robert Pattinson stars as Connie and Benny Safdie is perfect as his learning disabled brother Nicky. A robbery goes wrong. Nick is arrested. Connie tries to bail him out. Frantic.

Even More Films Villain (1971). Directed by Michael Tuchner Classic British gangster film starring Richard Burton as Vick, the psychotic leader who loves his Mum. The gang includes Ian McShane as his bisexual lover and Donald Sinden as a dodgy MP. Superior robbery goes wrong film.

Even More Films Le Petit Soldat (The Little Soldier) (1963). Directed by Jean-Luc Godard Banned due to the Algerian War, released eventually in 1963, this was controversial in its day. Excellent spy thriller with a lot of things people loved about Breathless but he did them here first.

Even More Films The Ice Tower (2025). Directed by Lucile Hadžihalilović I loved Hadžihalilović's films Earwig, Evolution and Innocence and this is fantastic too. Sometimes dreamlike. A young girl runs away and ends up on a film set with Marion Cottillard who takes a close interest in her. Superb.

Even More Films Hollywood 90028 (1973). Directed by Christina Hornisher Mark is a photographer. At the start he strangles a woman. Then we see him look for work and date other women. He meets Michele who he likes, but the end is sudden and shocking and has an amazing final shot. On Prime.

Even More Films She Will (2021). Directed by Charlotte Colbert Horror/thriller/surreal supernatural drama. Wonderfully atmospheric. Great cinematography for its low budget. Alice Krige (the Borg Queen from Star Trek) is an actress who finds she can exact revenge in her dreams on abusive men.

Even More Films Marty Supreme (2025). Directed by Josh Safdie This lives up to the hype. Chalamet is brilliant. He brings an obnoxious character to life so well that you get dragged along as he tries to become a table tennis champion. Not a sport film really. A great character study.

Even More Films Malpertuis (1971). Directed by Harry Kümel Bizarre film about a mansion owned by Orson Welles' Cassavius. The house itself is almost the star, although Susan Hampshire plays 6 characters!There is occult stuff going on. It's confusing but has to be seen to be believed.

Even More Films Ida (2013). Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski Anna, a nun, has to meet her only relative, Wanda, before her final vows. They go on a quest to find where Anna's parents and Wanda's child are buried. They find out more than they bargained for. Anna's faith is severely tested. Superb.

Even More Films Mr. Sardonicus (1961). Directed by William Castle This film had the Punishment Poll, where audiences could choose the fate of the villain. Castle introduces the film and gives the "result". It's about a surgeon forced to treat a man with a hideous fixed grin. Sadistic but fun.

Even More Films Cries and Whispers (1972). Directed by Ingmar Bergman Three sisters. One is dying. The other two aren't much use. They leave the maid to do the caring. There is much under the surface. The tension is unbearable. It gets particularly grim towards the end. Beautifully horrific.

Even More Films I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020). Directed by Charlie Kaufman Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette and David Thewlis star, so the acting is spot on. Plemons takes Buckley to meet his parents. Once there things get weird. It's all in the mind of a janitor it seems.

My favourite film this year was Radu Jude's Kontinetal '25. I also enjoyed:- The Girl with the Needle Steve Train Dreams Bugonia Bring Her Back Probably lots of others I've forgotten.

Even More Films Goké, Bodysnatcher from Hell (1968). Directed by Hajime Sato. Demented sci fi/horror. A hijacked plane is hit by a UFO in a psychedelic sky. The hijacker gets an alien implant in the head. The other survivors fight a lot. Much weirdness. Ridiculously entertaining. Free on YouTube.

Even More Films The Mastermind (2025). Directed by Kelly Reichardt Kelly Reichardt has a unique style and this time she has put that style together with a heist gone wrong type of film. Josh O'Connor is the loser son of a police chief who bungles the theft of four paintings. Things don't go well.

Even More Films Peripheral (2018). Directed by Paul Hyett Much better than reviews would have you believe. Hannah Arterton is Bobbi, a writer who is persuaded to use an AI machine to help write her next book. Bad idea. It doesn't go well. It's well done, creepy and with some good, surreal scenes.

Even More Films German Gothic horror set in Hungary. Laurin begins to see in her mind why the local children are disappearing. It's a creepy, disturbing film. There are some great sequences that show how you can make a clever, imaginative and darkly beautiful film with little money. Impressive.

Even More Films The Hired Hand (1971). Directed by Peter Fonda Stunning western that stars Fonda and the always great Warren Oates. Beautiful to look at. Great Bruce Langhorne music. Plus it's 1971 so you have no idea how it will end. Dreamlike disolves and slow motion. Just great. On YouTube.

Even More Films Himizu (2011). Directed by Sion Sono I love Sion Sono. This is another great one. Two teenage schoolchildren whose parents either neglect or abuse them are brought together in the wake of the Fukushima disaster. Unlike anything else except maybe another Sono film. Truly superb.

Even More Films War of the Worlds: Next Century (1981). Directed by Piotr Szulkin Szulkin's sort of sequel to War of the Worlds. Dedicated to H.G.Wells and Orson Welles. The next century is fast approaching and the Martians are back. It's a satire about TV, manipulation and invasions. Terrific.

Even More Films Shadow of Fire (2023). Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto Tsukamoto is known for Tetsuo and A Snake of June. This is a recent one set in Japan in 1946. A young boy lives with a prostitute and then goes off with a man bent on revenge, who uses him to help, as the boy has found a gun.

Even More Films The Face of Darkness (1976). Directed by Ian F. H. Lloyd This is a supernatural horror short - 57 minutes. Lennard Pearce from Only Fools and Horses is a pompous MP who wants to bring back the death penalty and finds a way to make an undead man help him, but he bodges the ritual.

Even More Films Steve (2025). Directed by Tim Mielants Excellent film starring Cillian Murphy. It's about a school for boys deemed uncontrollable. Murphy is Steve the head teacher. Brilliant with the boys but with his own secret issues. Some brilliant young actors. On Netflix. Unmissable stuff.

Even More Films Golem (1980). Directed by Piotr Szulkin Absurdist Polish film starring Marek Walczewski as Pernat. A confused man being interrogated about a murder he knows nothing about. Reminiscent of Brazil at times. Kafka-esque. It's confusing but endlessly fascinating. On MUBI in the UK.

Even More Films Interrogation (1982/1989). Directed by Ryszard Bugajski Polish nightmare of a film from 1982. Banned until 1989. Set in early '50s Poland, a woman (an astonishing Krystyna Janda) is abducted by the secret police who try to force confessions out of her, but she is a force of nature

Even More Films The Panic in Needle Park (1971). Directed by Jerry Schatzberg The film that got Al Pacino the part in The Godfather. It's not hard to see why. He's junkie Bobby. Kitty Winn is homeless, soon to be junkie Helen. They fall in love with drugs and each other. It has a 70s ending.

Even More Films Detachment (2011). Directed by Tony Kaye A drama, on the surface, about the failure of the American school system, directed by the controversial Tony Kaye, who directs in a very unusual but effective way here. Mostly depressing but with glimmers of hope. On Prime in the UK.

Even More Films Marketa Lazarova (1967). Directed by František Vláčil Epic black and white Czech film set in the 13th Century. The Christians are coming. A man's daughter is kidnapped and violence preceeds and follows. The soundtrack is fantastic. It's an astonishing piece of filmmaking.

Even More Films A Candle for the Devil (1973). Directed by Eugenio Martin Spanish horror with Judy Geeson. She plays Laura, who arrives at a hotel to meet her sister. However, her sister is dead. Killed by one of the women owners who can't stand women she finds depraved. More death follows.

Even More Films The End of August at the Hotel Ozone (1967). Directed by Jan Schmidt Black and white Czech post-apocalyptic film. It avoids the usual post-apocalyptic film tropes in favour of something more likely, more bleak and more hopeless. Beautifully filmed and acted. Free on YouTube.

Even More Films Song for a Raggy Boy (2003). Directed by Aisling Walsh Catholic abuse of boys at a reform school in 1939 Ireland. Aidan Quinn stars in the real story of a teacher who faught for his pupils against the violence of Iain Glen's Brother John. Glen is truly terrifying. Brutal.

Even More Films Big Boys Don't Cry (2020). Directed by Steve Crowhurst This is a grim tale starring Michael Socha, surely one of the UK's best actors. He plays Paul Connolly, on whose book the film is based. We flash back to his time at a children's home where he and others were abused. Grim.

Got myself a copy and I'm starting it today. Surprisingly, under 300 pages, but I'm a slow reader. Not a Slow Learner though hopefully.
