Even More Films Time of the Wolf (2003). Directed by Michael Haneke Set in the future after some unnamed disaster, the ever reliable Isabelle Huppert's husband is killed and she and her children must find safety. It feels horribly plausible. Haneke does science fiction and does it expertly.

Even More Films Dead Dicks (2019). Directed by Chris Bavota and Lee Paula Springer A woman visits her mentally ill brother and finds him dead in a closet. Then he appears behind her, naked. Every time he kills himself, he is reborn. Actually a moving film about the burden of mental illness.

Almost a new Cardiacs album. Huge congratulations to Jim Smith and a cast of thousands for finally finishing and releasing LSD, the double album Tim Smith was putting together when he had his stroke. Massed vocals stand in where Tim hadn't recorded vocals yet. One of my albums of the year for sure.

Even More Films She Dies Tomorrow (2020). Directed by Amy Seimetz A woman has an overwhelming feeling that she will die the next day. Her feelings cause a chain reaction. It seems to be about how we keep going, knowing it could end anytime. Many will hate the ending. I liked it. Free on TUBI.

Even More Films Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976). Directed by Ruggero Deodato An extreme Italian version of Starsky & Hutch by the man who made Cannibal Holocaust, written by Fernando di Leo. Hugely amoral cops wreak havoc and keep getting away with it. Worryingly entertaining. On YouTube.

Even More Films The Pyx (1973). Directed by Harvey Hart Canadian horror/thriller with Christopher Plummer as a detective and the wonderful Karen Black as a dead junkie prostitute who appears in flashbacks. Not much loved, but I like its bleak, sorrowful mood and Black is superb. On Prime.

Even More Films From Beyond (1986). Directed by Stuart Gordon Gordon's follow-up to Re-Animator is a lot less loved but has a lot to recommend it. Based on H.P.Lovecraft. It's very 80s. Lots of scenes of sex and gore. It's very over-the-top and hugely entertaining. Available on Prime in the UK.

Even More Films Containment (2015). Directed by Neil Mcenery-West A man wakes up to find himself stuck in his apartment. The door and windows are glued shut. The whole block is the same and then they see the hazmat suits. Low-budget. British. Mostly single location but very watchable. On Netflix

Even More Films Milano Calibro 9 (1972). Directed by Fernando di Leo Powerful Italian thriller in the polizzi style. Great soundtrack too. A man is released from prison and everyone thinks he has hidden money from a robbery. Gastone Moschin is great in the main role. Exciting and quite violent.

Even More Films Transmission (2023). Directed by Michael Hurst This is a low-budget horror film with a fair bit of originality to it. A man sits down to watch TV and keeps flicking between channels. As time goes on, we realise that everything on each channel is connected and not in a good way.

Even More Films Weapons (2025). Directed by Zach Cregger Liked his previous film Barbarian. Great first three-quarters but the last part is like a black comedy. Still worth seeing at a cinema for the good parts and you may like the ending. Definitely still keen to see where Cregger goes next.

Even More Films A Visitor to a Museum (1989). Directed by Konstantin Lopushansky Allegorical post-apocalyptic film, with Chernobyl and Perestroika obvious influences on the story. A bit like Stalker. It's quite magical and quite eerie and bleak as hell. Available free on YouTube. Recommended.

Even More Films Bad Girls Go to Hell (1965). Written and directed by Doris Wishman Gigi Darlene is Meg who accidentally kills a janitor who has raped her. She flees to New York, but things don't go well. No budget. Grim and camp in equal measures. Unbelievably, on MUBI at the moment in the UK.

Even More Films Art Garfunkel Double Bill Bad Timing (1980). Directed by Nicolas Roeg Carnal Knowledge (1971). Directed by Mike Nichols Art Garfunkel as an actor is surprisingly good. Both films show men in bad relationships that are mostly their fault. Bad Timing is particularly brutal.

Music Books #15 The tragic story of Darby Crash and his great band The Germs. Essential reading.

Music Books #14 Excellent book concentrating on Hawkwind in the 1970s. Reviews of the records, chronological history, essays and interviews. Makes you want to play the records, like any good music book should.

Even More Films - Terence Stamp Tribute Theorem (1968). Directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini Terence Stamp has died and this is my favourite film of his. A rich family and their maid have their lives turned upside down as Terence Stamp appears and seduces them all in turn and then vanishes. Superb.

Even More Films Killer Nun (1979). Directed by Giulio Berruti Anita Ekberg is Sister Gertrude, who has become addicted to morphine since an operation and thinks she has cancer but nobody believes her. She flies into violent rages and the elderly in her care suffer. Surprisingly good.

Even More Films La Piscine (1969). Directed by Jacques Deray This starts out as a romantic drama but turns into something else. Beautiful, wealthy people lying by a swimming pool in the grounds of an impressive property, relaxing and having fun. Surely it can't last? It doesn't. Excellent stuff.

This album is now available again on all streaming platforms. It was released in 2016 and was the first of the never-ending series of annual Kleistwahr albums. The latest The Battlefield Is Everywhere will be released next month.

Music Books #13 An incredibly long, blistering attack on Lennon and Yoko Ono. Whether a lot of it is true is debatable, but Goldman did a lot of research and interviewed a large number of people. Maybe he had a personal grudge? If you love Lennon, you'll hate this book. It's hard to put down though

Even More Films Fréwaka (2024). Directed by Aislinn Clarke This was recommended to me and didn't disappoint. It's more recent Irish horror. Quite low-budget but with great performances and yes, a goat! Childhood traumas, a house with a feisty old woman and an evil presence. Quite impressive.

Even More Films Double Bill 22 July (2018). Directed by Paul Greengrass Utoya - July 22 (2018). Directed by Erik Poppe Two different approaches to the attacks on the island of Utoya and at a government building in Norway that killed 77 people, mostly children. Both flawed but worth seeing.

Even More Films The Long Goodbye (1973). Directed by Robert Altman Elliott Gould as Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. Excellent US crime film. There are twists and turns and a very downbeat ending - it was the 70s! Excellent from start to finish and a fantastic cat performance too. On Prime UK.

Even More Films Bring Her Back (2025). Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou Australian horror. It's hard to beat. Especially when it's done this well. I loved the Philippou's previous film Talk to Me, but this is even better. See it in the cinema before it vanishes. Astonishingly good.

Even More Films Thanatomorphose (2012). Directed by Éric Falardeau Low-budget body horror that you'll need a strong stomach for. Kayden Rose plays Laura, who we see fighting with her jerk boyfriend. She is dead inside and begins to decompose externally in truly disgusting fashion. Vile but great.

Even More Films The Dark and the Wicked (2020). Directed by Bryan Bertino A son and daughter visit the farm where they grew up, as their father is near death, but their mother is annoyed that they've come and wants them to go away as evil has taken over the house. Very effective US horror.

Even More Films The Outcasts (1982). Directed by Robert Wynne Simmons Written and directed by Wynne-Simmons of The Blood on Satan's Claw fame but little known until its restoration years later. It's an excellent Irish folk horror featuring a bullied girl, a mythical and deadly musician and a goat

Music Books #12 Paul Hanley, ex-drummer with The Fall turned writer, writes a book about Pete Shelley and how he and Howard Devoto brought punk and making your own record to Manchester. Shelley comes across brilliantly and this should help keep his name there as an important part of music history.

Even More Films The Internecine Project (1974). Directed by Ken Hughes Thriller set in England starring the great James Coburn. He plays a politician who knows his past in intelligence will come back to haunt him. He devises a plan where 4 people who know all about his past will kill each other.

Even More Films I Start Counting (1970). Directed by David Greene Controversial at the time and the sort of film nobody would greenlight now. Jenny Agutter plays 15 year-old Wynne, who is in love with her foster brother, who is 32. She starts to think he is a killer but doesn't care. Fascinating

Music Books #11 Very useful reference book in the pre-internet 80s. As well as a discography, it had masses of contact details and advice. Loads of fanzines listed as well as labels, clubs etc.

Even More Films Highway Patrolman (1991). Directed by Alex Cox After his 1987 film Walker flopped at the box office, Cox found it hard to get finance for his films and ended up in Mexico, making this subtitled film on a shoestring budget. It's a good job that he did though, as it's a great one.

This album is now available on all streaming services again after having disappeared for a while. It's been easily the most played Kleistwahr album on bandcamp over the last couple of months. Not sure what sparked that off 12 years after it came out. Any ideas?

I Saw the TV Glow (2024). Directed by Jane Schoenbrun I liked Schoenbrun's previous film, We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021). This felt like more of the same, but it's a world unlike anyone else's out there and I love originality. A trans experience allegory that's not corny. Unusual.

Even More Films Strange Darling (2023). Directed by J T Mollner This is a tough one to talk about as it's a film that wants to get you on the wrong foot and I wouldn't want to spoil its twists and turns. It's a violent thriller in 7 chapters, which are mostly shown in the wrong order. Excellent.

Even More Films Forest of the Hanged (1965). Directed by Liviu Ciulei Obscure but excellent Romanian First World War film that should be much better known. A Romanian lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian army struggles with fighting against other Romanians. Grim but staggeringly good. On Klassiki.

Music Books #10 Massive and extremely thorough story of New Order by Peter Hook himself. Excellent stories as well as all the stuff for indie anorak types and loads of insults for Barney, who Hook must have particularly hated when he wrote this. Destroys any remaining mystique in hilarious fashion.

Music Books #9 If you want a thorough run-through of everything The Fall did, this is the book for you. There's a chapter on each album which takes the albums track by track. Plus details of radio sessions, compilation albums and the many live albums. It's a great reference book. Essential.

Even More Films The Nightingale (2018). Directed by Jennifer Kent Kent also wrote this. She previously wrote and directed the intriguing 2014 film The Babadook. This is a very different film. It's a brutal, gruelling revenge drama set in Tasmania in the 1820s. Hard to watch at times, but worth it

Music Books #8 Excellent and thorough account of the infamous show. The reasons why it ended up in such an unlikely venue. What happened before, during and after the show. All in great detail. I was surprised at how much I'd never heard before.

Music Books #7 Incredibly bleak account of Nico in the 80s when she lived in Manchester. Sometimes very funny too. It's very well written. Essential.

Music Books #6 Erin Osmon's book is, to my knowledge, the only one available and it gives you all the information you need if, like me, you're a fan of the late, great singer-songwriter. It's a little cold and clinical at times and doesn't go too deep, but it's a good place to start.

Music Books #5 This could have done with a decent editor and proofreader, but when the story is as wild as this, it's still a great read.
