Stephen Meixner kindly sent me this new Contrastate CD and it is truly excellent. A soundtrack for a film that was never made. It is giallo inspired and works brilliantly. Possibly the best thing they've ever done. Highly recommended.

Backrooms (2026). Directed by Kane Parsons Chiwetel Ejiofor is Clark who discovers the endless backrooms through a wall in the basement of his cheap furniture shop. Renate Reinsve is his psychiatrist who is looking for him and ends up in the backrooms too. It's creepy if not terrifying. Intriguing.

Even More Films Obsession (2025). Written and directed by Curry Barker The old Monkey's Paw story. Bear loves Nikki. She may not feel the same, so he wishes on a one wish toy that she will adore him and she adores him way too much. It's the execution that makes an old story really work. Gory.

Even More Films Only the River Flows (2023). Directed by Wei Shujun Chinese police drama starring Zhu Yilong as a detective trying to solve the murder of a woman known as Granny Four. More people die and the investigation starts to drive him insane. Dark, moody bleak and quite excellent.

Anthony di Franco returns with his first Ax album in years and it's a great one. Out now on the great Nashazphone record label. Highly recommended.

Even More Films Cold as Marble (2022). Directed by Asif Rustamov From Azerbaijan comes a tale of an artist who is in a relationship with a married woman and whose father is in prison for the murder of his mother. The father is released on parole and moves in with his son and dominates his life.

Even More Films Night of Fear (1973). Directed by Terry Bourke Demented Australian horror short. Just shy of an hour. Unbelievably, made as a pilot for a TV series. It was not only rejected but banned for a time. Virtually no dialogue. Quick unpleasant edits. Non-stop tension. Lots of screaming.

Great night at Merzbow, Cavalera, Bernocchi last night. Great show, especially when Iggor Cavalera started on the drums. Sounded fantastic. Great to be there in the company of Chris Low and SPK legend Dom Guerin.

Ramleh return to Geneva this September but it will be a very different show from last time. 4-piece bleak psychedelic rock like the last few records. Tickets on the door only. Hopefully see you there.

Even More Films The Pornographers (1966). Directed by Shôhei Imamura This is not a pornographic film. It's a film about pornography, amongst other things. Extremely strange film presented as normal. Probably offensive to many. It discusses or presents a lot of taboos for a 1966 film. Fascinating.

Even More Films Granny's Dancing on the Table (2015). Directed by Ami-Ro Sköld A depressing drama in the way only the Swedish know how to do and that isn't a criticism. Imagine if Bergman had used stop-motion animation in his films and you're not far off. Part live action, part animated. Superb.

House of All live at Oslo, London last night. Sorry for the poor picture. This is history for Fall fans. Karl Burns and Paul Hanley drumming together again just like it's the early 80s. Not only that but Simon Wolstencroft drums with them too and yes for several songs all 3 of them play together.

Even More Films A Patch of Fog (2015). Directed by Michael Lennox This is a small film but it's lifted up by two tremendous performances from Stephen Graham and Conleth Hill. Graham's security guard catches Hill's novelist shoplifting and blackmails him into becoming "friends". Nice twists.

Even More Films The Unscarred (2000). Directed by Buddy Giovinazzo Giovinazzo made the excellent films Combat Shock and No Way Home. This is a terrific thriller from 2000, starring the superb James Russo. 4 friends from University reunite after 20 years but it goes very badly. Free on YouTube.

Even More Films Love (2015). Directed by Gaspar Noé This gets written off as a lesser Noé film. I think that's unfair. Yes, some of the sex scenes are not simulated and yes, it did get released in 3D! Those things aside, it's a great, intense depiction of a powerful relationship and its fallout.

Even More Films Reflection in a Dead Diamond (2025). Directed by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani Some will think this style over substance but this is style plus substance. It's in the style of 60s European spy films but with rapid editing that is exhilarating and confusing in the best way.

Even More Films Night Birds (1970). Directed by Andy Milligan Just arrived on BFI Player. Well worth watching if you like 70s disastrous relationship dramas. Dee takes homeless Dink to her horrible flat where a roller coaster of a relationship develops. Low-budget, stagey but fascinating.

Even More Films Day-Dream (1964). Directed by Tetsuji Takechi Early Japanese pink film. A man goes to the dentist and sees a woman in the waiting room. The treatment room is set up to treat two people at once. He is put to sleep next to her and has fantasies about her and the dentist. Bizarre.

Even More Films Death Warmed Up (1984). Directed by David Blyth It's 1980s New Zealand. Early Peter Jackson style. Michael Hurst plays Michael Tucker who has been brainwashed by a scientist into killing his parents. Now he's released from incarceration and wants revenge. Cheap, nasty, gory but fun

Beyond the Darkness (1979). Directed by Joe D'Amato A taxidermist's wife dies and he decides to dig her up and stuff her, as it were. The taxidermy scenes are very gory. He lives with a housekeeper who is in love with him but he is still in love with his dead wife which leads to unpleasant issues.

Even More Films Blood for Dracula (1974). Directed by Paul Morrissey Udo Keir stars as Dracula, wasting away as he can't find virgin blood, so he goes to Italy with assistant Anton and they find a family with four daughters, but Joe Dallasandro has got there first with two girls. Great stuff.

Even More Films No Way Home (1996). Directed by Buddy Giovinazzo Giovinazzo is best known for the 80s classic Combat Shock. This isn't as original as that one but Tim Roth elevates it as a man released from prison on parole. Things don't go well when he moves in with his drug dealing brother.

Even More Films Katalin Varga (2009). Directed by Peter Strickland Early Strickland revenge saga. A woman and her son are throw out by the husband when the secret comes out that she was raped. She sets off to settle the score. Nurse with Wound on the soundtrack. Unpredictable and beautiful.

Even More Films Paralell Mothers (2021). Directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Underrated Almodóvar. Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit are the mothers. Cruz worries that her baby isn't the one she gave birth to whilst arranging an excavation of a civil war grave. Smit may have her child. Drama and politics.

Even More Films Glen and Randa (1971). Directed by Jim McBride This is an early low-budget post-apocalyptic science fiction film. Young Glen and Randa leave their commune to go to The City. The fun of the start turns serious as they travel. Highly original and surprisingly good. Free on YouTube.

Even More Films No Other Choice (2025). Directed by Park Chan-wook South Korean black comedy/thriller. Lee Byung-hun stars as Man-su who loses his job of 25 years. When he can't get another, he plots to kill the competition so he will get the job. It doesn't go to plan of course. Superb.

Even More Films The Turin Horse (2011). Directed by Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky I can't imagine a bleaker film than Threads but this is a close second. Tarr and wife's final film. A man and his daughter fall apart as their horse refuses to eat and their well dries up. Harrowing and haunting.

Even More Films I Am Twenty (1965). Written and Directed by Marlen Khutsiev Soviet drama, attacked by Kruschev and recut. The original version was released years later. French New Wave style tale of 3 friends struggling to make their lives worthwhile. Fascinating on location in Moscow 60s scenes.

Even More Films Titicut Follies (1967). Directed by Frederick Wiseman Wiseman just died and this is back on BFI Player. It's a documentary about a facility for the criminally insane in Massachusetts. Mostly sad and nasty. Sometimes funny. Banned for years, it's an all-time great documentary.

Even More Films The Devil Probably (1977). Directed by Robert Bresson Antoine Monnier plays Charles who we discover is dead at the start of the film, either by suicide or murder. The film then goes back to how he got to that point. A fascinating, nihilistic and haunting late Bresson classic.

Even More Films The Empty Man (2020). Directed by David Prior Horror starring James Badge Dale. This starts with a brilliant 20 minute segment that the rest doesn't quite live up to but it's fascinating if a bit too long and the ending doesn't entirely make sense but gets points for bleakness.

Even More Films The House at the End of Time (2013). Directed by Alejandro Hidalgo Venezuelan horror. A woman is imprisoned for 30 years for killing her husband and child. 30 years later she returns and the house reveals its time-warping secrets about the killings. Eerie and surprisingly moving.

Even More Films Mother of Flies (2025). Directed by John Adams, Zelda Adams and Toby Poser Another Adams Family film. They act, direct, edit, write and do all the music. In this one Poser is a healer. Zelda has cancer. Can she heal her or does she have other motives? Their best yet.

Even More Films Silence and Cry (1968). Directed by Miklós Janscó I posted about My Way Home before and Klassiki also have this film. This one is set just after the end of WWI. The communists have been ousted in Hungary and are being hunted down. One hides on a farm. Bleak and staggering.

Even More Films In My Skin (2002). Directed by Marina De Van French body horror. De Van directs, writes and stars in a remarkable debut feature. She plays Esther who badly injures her leg and becomes obsessed by the wound. Enlarging it and then moving on to her arm. Fascinating and repulsive.

Even More Films My Way Home (1965). Directed by Miklós Janscó Hungarian film set near the end of World War II. Andras Kozak plays a Hungarian student who may have been fighting with the Hungarians. He ends up on a farm guarded by a young Russian. They become friends until things go bad. Superb.

Even More Films Good Time (2017). Directed by Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie Excellent crime thriller from the Safdies. Robert Pattinson stars as Connie and Benny Safdie is perfect as his learning disabled brother Nicky. A robbery goes wrong. Nick is arrested. Connie tries to bail him out. Frantic.

Even More Films Villain (1971). Directed by Michael Tuchner Classic British gangster film starring Richard Burton as Vick, the psychotic leader who loves his Mum. The gang includes Ian McShane as his bisexual lover and Donald Sinden as a dodgy MP. Superior robbery goes wrong film.

Even More Films Le Petit Soldat (The Little Soldier) (1963). Directed by Jean-Luc Godard Banned due to the Algerian War, released eventually in 1963, this was controversial in its day. Excellent spy thriller with a lot of things people loved about Breathless but he did them here first.

Even More Films The Ice Tower (2025). Directed by Lucile Hadžihalilović I loved Hadžihalilović's films Earwig, Evolution and Innocence and this is fantastic too. Sometimes dreamlike. A young girl runs away and ends up on a film set with Marion Cottillard who takes a close interest in her. Superb.

Even More Films Hollywood 90028 (1973). Directed by Christina Hornisher Mark is a photographer. At the start he strangles a woman. Then we see him look for work and date other women. He meets Michele who he likes, but the end is sudden and shocking and has an amazing final shot. On Prime.

Even More Films She Will (2021). Directed by Charlotte Colbert Horror/thriller/surreal supernatural drama. Wonderfully atmospheric. Great cinematography for its low budget. Alice Krige (the Borg Queen from Star Trek) is an actress who finds she can exact revenge in her dreams on abusive men.

Even More Films Marty Supreme (2025). Directed by Josh Safdie This lives up to the hype. Chalamet is brilliant. He brings an obnoxious character to life so well that you get dragged along as he tries to become a table tennis champion. Not a sport film really. A great character study.

Even More Films Malpertuis (1971). Directed by Harry Kümel Bizarre film about a mansion owned by Orson Welles' Cassavius. The house itself is almost the star, although Susan Hampshire plays 6 characters!There is occult stuff going on. It's confusing but has to be seen to be believed.
