This has been my consistent position: direct subsidies to the tenant are far better than the paternalistic and overbearing nature of current vouchers where the landlord is forced to enter a tripartite contractual relationship with the tenant and the government. Let the tenant pay the landlord.

It looks like the Mayor has a profoundly wrong view of zoning. It is fundamentally based on the police power-that the gov't can regulate land use to prevent negative externalities that would be nuisances ahead of when they would occur.

The thing that makes rentals most exploitative in my opinion is the government. The feds massively subsidize or prop up home ownership and renters lose out. Locals will often disproportionately tax rental housing because homeowners have more political power, so renters get stuck with the bill.

I refuse to find anything nefarious in more people who want to live in the city and residents consensually selling to them and developers to make some money. As the underlying paper admits, to the extent residents are being "pushed out," that is because our government refuses to allow new housing.

I was reminded today that the cute 1970s effort to legislate away pay toilets should be taught as a prime example of how well-intentioned efforts lead to horrible results. Because they were successful and ended up legislating away nearly all publicly-available toilets.

This is crazy. Quetcy Lozada's response to being informed that food trucks were hurting because of her curfew at 11PM is to attack them for not complying with an unenforced food truck ban between midnight and 7AM. This is just cruel prohibitionism and ego.
