Piping Plover, ready for departure, & the NYC Ferry ⛴️ 💙 🐦

It’s Labor Day Weekend, y’all! While many Piping Plovers have left to head south for the winter months, there’s still fledgling & adult plovers, oystercatchers, terns and skimmers with us, & many other shorebird species passing through & stopping off on their LONG migrations. So what does that mean?

Hanging with the big kids! One of these birds is about to head off on their first migration! We hold every Piping Plover in our hearts — especially the newest fledglings — as they head off on their perilous journeys. 🧵

This very special pair of American Oystercatchers - YAT & YAU - have been nesting together on Rockaway Beach since 2014! Like many other skimmers, terns, oystercatchers & plovers, they’ve thrived at the @nycparks Rockaway Beach Endangered Species Nesting Area in Arverne & Edgemere.

The Fort Tilden brood of 3 is growing up fast! Both parents are still diligently protecting them, but of course, Piping Plover chicks feed themselves from birth. So much hope for this New Yorker family. ❤️❤️❤️ 📷: Benjamin Forbes

🚨HEY NYC, HEADED TO THE BEACH? PLEASE READ!

A sweet moment of a new little New Yorker & their parent at Fort Tilden. There’s several broods of young Piping Plover chicks along this beach & several beaches across Rockaway. Temporary beach closures work, they make all the difference for this endangered species & other fragile shorebirds.

One of our favorite days is New York City Department of Parks & Recreation’s Celebrate Shorebirds each June - a time to celebrate & champion the diversity of shorebird species that call our beaches home! We had many great conversations with folks who live in Far Rockaway, Edgemere, Arverne & beyond!

It’s been a challenging season so far with a lot of nest loss & predation. Piping Plovers will keep at it, so we must too! And …. we do have some chicks who have been seen taking short flights 😊, like this not so little one seen yesterday at Breezy Point Tip ❤️

Fort Tilden update — the brood of 3 chicks ❤️ continue under the watchful eye of their parents, and we have had TWO MORE HATCHES within 24 hours! We are sharing this first look at one of the new families, caught with telephoto zoom at a distance, by Benjamin Forbes.

One week old & on the move! One of the Fort Tilden brood of 🐥🐥🐥, our newest New Yorkers, spotted this morning! But wait - there’s more! There are Piping Plover chicks on NYC Parks, NPS / Gateway Breezy Point Co-op beaches.

Beautiful day! Sunrise with 3 chicks at Fort Tilden 🌞! This moment was delightfully caught on camera by Benjamin Forbes. We are chronicling this family as their challenges mirror the myriad of threats that our NYC plovers are faced with.

One of the three, little & most fragile New Yorkers seen early this morning at the beach. All three chicks seen with their awesome parents guarding over them. A temporary beach closure, our volunteers & staff from National Park Service indeed help them.

Update from Fort Tilden - we have 3 chicks with us. Our photographer Benjamin Forbes caught this moment today at sunrise. We hold the 4th chick, who wasn’t in this world for long, forever in our hearts.

And then there was one. This Piping Plover chick hatched on May 31st together with their 3 siblings. Only one remains. Predation of Piping Plovers comes from crabs, cats, dogs, gulls and more.

Our volunteers are committed, passionate, & kind. They are dedicated and fierce shorebird advocates. They are New Yorkers, just like the plovers. Some travel via a few trains and a bus (or two) from Manhattan or Brooklyn, or by their bike just down the block in Rockaway.
