All 11 Nyakagezi mountain gorillas (including two infants) were observed to be healthy with no injuries or signs of illness. Baby Byiringyiro (meaning “hope”), was born in September; the baby born in November is still unnamed. Long-term vet care helps gorilla families like this continue to thrive.

Drs. Fabrice & Lina successfully treated an adult female mountain gorilla in Virunga NP, DRC for an open abscess on her left breast. The next day, Dr. Fabrice reported that Mahisho was active, feeding and always with her infant. We are hopeful for rapid healing. Wishing everyone a nice weekend.

Silverback Marambo of Muhoza group in Volcanoes NP, Rwanda sustained multiple injuries from an interaction with an unidentified lone silverback. Dr. Gaspard assessed Marambo's wounds - they were clean with no sign of infection. Marambo will be closely monitored until his injuries are fully healed.

Adult female mountain gorilla Turimaso of Susa group in Volcanoes NP, Rwanda was observed with hair loss and brownish discoloration of her hair coat. But she currently has normal activity levels & appetite, so we will continue monitoring her in case a future intervention is needed. #gorilladoctors

Snare Removal Intervention: On 11/15, we received an urgent call from Volcanoes NP rangers: Umusingi, a 5-year-old juvenile in Igisha group, had been caught in a rope snare. The part wrapped around his wrist was cinched tightly, which could lead loss of his hand and/or a life-threatening infection.

Dr. Adrien observed all 15 mountain gorillas of Igisha group and noticed subtle browning in the hair coats of a few individuals, a small change that can signal early gastrointestinal parasites. Because this was caught now, the group will be closely monitored in case an intervention is needed.

On November 20, Dr. Adrien visited the 22 mountain gorillas of Muhoza group in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Following his observations that several gorillas had browning hair, fecal samples are being collected so that we can test for parasites and determine a treatment plan, if necessary.

Earlier this week, Dr. Adrien checked on silverback Ishavu of Kureba group in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda following reports of multiple wounds affecting his movement.

For over 2 years, silverback Isano of Agashya group in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park has been closely monitored for skin lesions around his upper body.

#ThrowbackThursday: In 2016, an orphaned Grauer’s gorilla named Lulingu was confiscated from poachers by ICCN. A few months later, Lulingu was transferred to GRACE (Gorilla Rehabilitation & Conservation Education Center), the world’s only rehabilitation center for Grauer’s gorillas.

On November 3, Dr. Cedric visited Katsabara group in Mt. Tshiaberimu sector of Virunga NP. He observed all 5 members of the group during the health check.

Since earlier this year, our veterinary team has been administering deworming treatments for adult female Ruterana of Rushegura group in Bwindi Impenetrable NP, Uganda. Recently, Dr. Nelson visited Rushegura group to do a follow-up assessment of Ruterana after her third deworming treatment.

Drs. Gaspard & Adrien raced into Volcanoes NP after trackers reported 3yo Ikirango was caught in a snare. By the time they arrived, Ikirango had successfully freed himself. He was limping slightly but otherwise active & in good visual health with an excellent prognosis for a full recovery.

Mirangara, a juvenile mountain gorilla in Bwindi was observed with wounds on her left arm on 19 August. There was no sign of infection and while she was limping she could still climb trees. During a recent follow-up, Dr. Ricky observed that Mirangara was almost fully recovered!

Dr. Ricky checked on Muyambi group, a family of 5 mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable NP, Uganda. They were calm, feeding & resting. Silverback Muyambi (1) stayed close to the 3 females vocalizing throughout Dr. Ricky's observation. Juvenile Kituta (2) was also feeding with bursts of play.

Fun facts! From April 1 to June 30 we conducted 88 health checks & monitoring visits and performed 20 interventions to treat ill or injured mountain gorillas. This included Dr. Ricky rescuing a blackback from a snare in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. The gorilla made a full recovery.

Mondaze...anyone else? 🙃🦍 DYK - when gorillas are sick they sometimes stay in their night nest sleeping and feeding less. Those are some of the clinical signs we look for to assess health when we are checking on our gorilla patients. In this photo the #silverback is simply resting, not at all ill.

Last week Dr. Adrien checked on Muhoza group in Volcanoes NP, Rwanda, a family of 22 mtn gorillas. The vegetation was so dense that Dr. Adrien was only able to observe 12 during his visit, all healthy! We'll keep checking on the group until we can complete a visual health assessment of all 22.

Something about this photo gave us #wednesdayvibes. 🙃Dr. Adrien captured Umoja and her infant during his recent visit to Hirwa group in Volcanoes NP, Rwanda. And while Umoja had a small cut on her lip in the process of healing, her infant didn't seem too concerned about crawling on her face!
